Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I am doing this years Hatch-A-Lang and plan on doing the Easter one. I seen a thread created for a Valentines Day Hatch-A-Long. I would do that one but it will be way too close to this one. Need to wait a little longer between hatches.

I want to do an Easter one too, but I want to find some show girl eggs from an established line.

On page 1131 I posted about my NN's being practically bald and posted some pictures of them. They did not have any new feathers growing in or anything. Well good news on my Naked Necks! We had our first really cold spell and they all started sprouting feathers over night. They are now fully feathered and look normal. I guess they were just having really hard molts and the weather turning reminded them they needed to regrow.

I don't know any other explanation. Anyway, whats important to me is that they are all pretty and warm again.

My first Naked neck i raised on from 3 weeks. She is laying now. She is about 7 months.


This is the only survivor of a batch of 5 I purchased. I bought them at a bad time when the weather turned unexpectedly. Do you think its a Roo? I wasn't sure but the shiny feathers are telling me she is a he. It is only 3 months old. If it is a Roo, Im going to try and pair the 2. When do you think he will be fertile? 2 months more?

Okay, since this breed will be completely new to me when my eggs hatch next month, please, please, please tell me how to sex this breed. Looking at the photos above, the primary difference I saw was in the tail feathers, but the wattles and comb look larger on the pullet than the cockerel, so what am I missing?

You'll just have to watch them. It really hard to explain how I sex them , but I usually look at the legs. Makes usually have thicker legs. Then after they get bigger then you'll start seeing the saddle and hackle feathers.

Comb difference is down to age- shes's way older and in full lay.

The differences is best compared in birds of the same age. At 7 months his comb/wattles will be much bigger, thicker redder than hers.

On top of what draye said- color is often a big clue, especially with the buff or red hatchery stock as yours seem to be. Roosters are almost always a shade darker than the hens of the same color, although your hen happens to be darker than most hatchery hens(making her seem almost as dark as the boy)-in her case her 'male counterpart' would be deeper red.

Another helpful hint is solid vs. not so solid color, hens have a solid body color, boys get a darker area over the back and part of the wings.

Aren't the tail feathers a dead give a away in comparison to those two? That was what made me think the bottom one was surely a roo.
