Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Im picking up two naked-neck pullets tomorrow. Ive never owned this breed, is there anything I should be aware of or do they have any special needs to be met?

Being a very old breed, they do carry over one trait that one needs to be aware of for a couple of weeks. They retain their 'egg tooth' for up to 10 to 14 days and if you aren't careful while kissing on them when they are young, they might give you an unsightly cleft lip. Be sure to kiss them on top of their heads...and no beak to cheek (or lips) for a while. Just kidding....lolololol

I hope everyone realizes that I'm just kidding here!!!

I've actually found them to be surprisingly easy to keep. Mine have just turned 5 weeks old and I've now moved them out of the brooder and into their coop. They began roosting at 2 weeks, have been incredibly hardy, intelligent and wonderfully active, and have very friendly personalities. This is my first time raising them as well so I didn't know what to expect. I've fallen in love with the breed! I've chosen to feed mine higher protein levels than some people might, but I wanted them to feather out and grow quickly at the start...which they did. I think you'll really like them!

I agree.... Not just NN, all chickens do this to you.... This is one of my NN from last year, hatched in april:

Last night I heard a bunch of cheeping from the chicks. One of the NNs had gotten out of the brooder and they were all calling to each other. I guess it is time to move them into the shower so they can't escape. The cats told me they'd babysit the chicks, but I don't know if that is the best idea.

Actually, they are very good cats.

This morning I wasn't late for work, but I did spend more time than I should with the chicks, which included giving a pep talk (peep talk???) to the NNs about the dangers of escaping from their brooder.
