Rudy is doing well even in the cold. Putting him w/ the rabbits was the best thing I ever did, they are little electric blankets for him at night. The wool sweater for clothing has been the best by far.

Don't clip wing feathers, pinion them as day olds (or close to it) they absolutely can not fly pinioned.

Excellent Idea!!! Better idea....dissuade her from wanting them. She's got plenty to keep her busy as it is. We have her backing off a bit when we talk about how good it will to have duck breast about twice a month....

If we were to have ducks, Moscovies they would be but the prevailing opinion here is "let's just not have any".

No they love living together, it is a perfect match.

Moskoky are on my list for this spring. I ate one a few months ago, I'm planning on 2 females and a male then eating the grow outs.

in pinioning how much of the wing is cut off?

When You Pinion a Muscovy do it at a day or 2 old with a pair of scissors just cut off the first wing tip above the joint. At that point there is almost nothing to it, no blood or anything, takes just a second.

Like cutting off a whole hand off, right? I was wondering if the whole hand part- where all the primaries are is cut off or cutting half of the hand part is all that's necessary.

Something that confused me in the past was seeing some exotic waterfowl or birds like crowned cranes, some of them seemed unable to fully stretch out the pinioned wing during flapping kind of looked like the hand plus part of the arm was cut off also.

Everybody says the same as you do- pinioning is not traumatic to the chick if done at day old and survival is excellent.
