Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Speaking of frisky cockerels. Well my isn't exactly a cockerel. He a full grown breeding rooster.

Never have I had any trouble from him, this one

until today. I had noticed him watching me for a while but he never acted like he wanted to jump me. Well he did today he was across the pen gawking around I stepped into the closed area by the nest boxes and looked in then stepped over to check to see if they needed any feed then he nailed me up on my leg just below the hip. When I went to take my shower I found a good size scrap on my leg. I got him cornered and scared the .....................poop out if him, I think it will be a while before he tries that again.

Ugh! My NN pullets are being terrorized by the cockerels. I had to put one of my girls in isolation after a very "frisky" cockerel slashed open the back of her neck twice. I'm really wishing I had a place to keep the boys while their hormones are raging because this is getting out of hand.

It almost always LOOKS worse than it really is. Generally, the pullet's necks will scab over and likely not even show any scaring.

Here is my blue, now I am wondering if it is a boy. Was thinking for sure that it was a girl.

I hope you aren't thing if 'girl' names...but I have often been wrong!

It almost always LOOKS worse than it really is. Generally, the pullet's necks will scab over and likely not even show any scaring.

I guess it's just harder to witness since they don't have feathers to conceal the cuts and bruises. This particular pullet has so many lacerations on her there was barely any skin left. She seems to be the favorite of ALL the cockerels, poor thing.

Ugh! My NN pullets are being terrorized by the cockerels. I had to put one of my girls in isolation after a very "frisky" cockerel slashed open the back of her neck twice. I'm really wishing I had a place to keep the boys while their hormones are raging because this is getting out of hand. 

I had a pullet one time that got cut up pretty good by an over zealous cockerel. Put some Betadine Solution on it and that cockerel never done that again.

I wouldn't count on that! Take a stick w/ you whenever you go in his enclosure, I garuntee you will need it again.

Oh I figure he will try again, most do. It will be a while. After a rooster tries to jump me or does jump me every time I go into tge run I always walk toward him and usually try to corner him. Won't usually do anything to him unless he does try jumping me, it just scares them.

In March I hatched out 13 turkens. I sold two that looked like pullets and gave away 3 I knew were cockerels. That leaves me with 8. I swear every one of them has a red face and is growing a big comb. They will be a month old tomorrow. It is still early but I'm starting to freak out! LOL

Do turken pullets ever have a red neck at one month old?

I've seen NN pullets get real red on the face quicker than the cockerels. I've also seen their combs look redder than the cockerels. That is why if I like the looks of them I usually keep them a while longer before I decide to cull or not.
