I set 200 eggs today.

Everything is Naked Neck some how.

31 from a Blue Jersey Giant over four hens.
89 from Blue Copper (Wheaten) over 7 hens all daughters of my former Salmon rooster. Two of them lay green eggs ( 32 of the eggs were green) rest were light brown.
14 eggs were from my Mottled Partridge hen she's in a run by herself with a Red NN rooster that has mottling on his wing area.
16 eggs from a Black Crossbred hen that I hatched year before last 1/2 Jersey Giant and 1/4 each EasterEgger and Production Red.
She is with a NN rooster that us basically a sexlink. His daddy was the Salmon and mama was a Barred hen. I also have three Welsummer eggs that he mated with.
2 more Welsummers eggs covered by a Red pea comb NN.
The last 45 are from three NN hens by the Blue Copper rooster above from the New Years hatch they were covered by a Silver Duckwing Araucana.

And I was wringing my hands over starting 40! lol

I usually set more than I need. Gives me room if I lose a few. And I go through them if they aren't naked necked they are going to an auction the Saturday after. They usually sale pretty good.

I going to try to keep around 40-50 and then start culling the cockerels as soon as they start looking like cockerels.

Wow... 200 at one go!

Anyone in the deep south/high heat areas think it's really better to hatch in the fall/winter/early spring than in the summer heat to avoid stress?
Here in FL we really don't even have much of a winter. It does cool off in Jan/Feb. And we will get a few freezing nights. But not too many. For the most part it's still pretty warm by northern standards... of course we all think we are going to die of hypothermia when it's 40-50 out. LOL

The only advantage I see is that you have pullets ready to start laying in March/April area (spring). I've hatched on September and October nearly every year since I've had my incubators.

I usually never hatch from the last week of June through August I've lost too many to heat stress then. I usually try not to hatch after Nay but have if weather isn't too hot.

Yes it is. This is the first time I've set this many at once. I did set 191 once but had a lot if shipped eggs in it and only had around 75 to hatch. So I figure I'll come out okay with this one with all the quitters and non fertile.

So glad for you! I don't even know where would I put 200 birds or anything near 50 chicks. I think the last comination should give you some nice chicks. Is that rooster rumpless?

Makes sense.

Between the high heat and humidity here, and the frequent rain/tropical storms(hurricane season is May-November), I think it's at least worth my consideration to hatch only in the cooler/drier months.
I do still see a number of chicks on offer on CL through the summer, but I have to suspect that they are being incubator hatched, and cared for indoors for a time. Not really ideal for me if I can avoid it. And the majority of birds listed now seem to be juvenile or mature.

I actually have a neighbor up the road from me who usually has an 'eggs for sale' sign out, and it's been down. I suspect that his hens are off the lay due to heat stress.

Yep he's rumplessness. I've never had Araucana's before and don't know I'd they have the ear tufts at hatch it not. I can't tell that he has any right now. But he's a true Araucana though.
