Yep he's rumplessness. I've never had Araucana's before and don't know I'd they have the ear tufts at hatch it not. I can't tell that he has any right now. But he's a true Araucana though.

Here in Croatia you can only buy rumpless true araucanas. Some people have single combed green eggers that don't have anything with araucanas, they look like every other single combed chickens.

Anyone in the deep south/high heat areas think it's really better to hatch in the fall/winter/early spring than in the summer heat to avoid stress?
Here in FL we really don't even have much of a winter. It does cool off in Jan/Feb. And we will get a few freezing nights. But not too many. For the most part it's still pretty warm by northern standards... of course we all think we are going to die of hypothermia when it's 40-50 out. LOL

Yeah...with the intense heat here I'm definitely waiting until it cools down some...and at least falls below 95 in the daytime. When the rains come through and cool it down it gives me a good chance to observe the chicken's behavior for temperature preferences. We had three days in a row that peaked around 100 degrees for about three hours, but was quickly cooled by rains so the average daytime temp hovered around 80. By day two I had four broody hens. I take that as direct communication from my girls as to when to start hatching, though I'm now trying to break their broodiness as the temps will once again start climbing as the rains dry up.

Between the high heat and humidity here, and the frequent rain/tropical storms(hurricane season is May-November), I think it's at least worth my consideration to hatch only in the cooler/drier months.
I do still see a number of chicks on offer on CL through the summer, but I have to suspect that they are being incubator hatched, and cared for indoors for a time. Not really ideal for me if I can avoid it. And the majority of birds listed now seem to be juvenile or mature.

I actually have a neighbor up the road from me who usually has an 'eggs for sale' sign out, and it's been down. I suspect that his hens are off the lay due to heat stress.

My broodies sat in July and hatched several chicks. Temp here in high desert is 96 to 100. My hens continue to lay all summer.

How early were they. I can see that they were premature !
