Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Here is a pic of my two NN Turken hens. Raised as chicks together, having a sun bath.

I might would be able to keep him but I'm going to move on. Got too many things going on.

Now:

Picture of 9 of 27 Naked Neck babies.
Daddies were either a Blue Jersey Giant or a Blue Copper Naked Neck, I also have two other NN roosters that sired three chicks each ( this I know because I had 6 Welsummer eggs that they were in with a total of all 6 hatching).



These are all black or blue chicks, so I figure they were by the first two roosters I listed above. Figure I can tell which are which when they begin to mature.

I had one Araucana Turken that ended up being rumpless. Of course he was a cockerel. Pics below are at 5 weeks and 6 weeks. I gave him to a neighbor and she absolutely adores him. She calls him "the white one" so apparently he feathered out mostly white. When I go to visit I will take new pictures.

I did like the rumpless NN, they were rather cute.. did not care much for the tufts and all the problems it brought.

None of my birds are tufted. I think the tufts are rather silly..and why breed a lethal gene?

I got some culls from a back yard farm in Seattle. She kept all the biggest pullets with tufts and the best coloring. While my Aracauna hens are on the small side, I like them a lot. They crossed nicely with my turken rooster.

Still waiting for my turken-marans to lay. The oldest one is 6 months and is taking her sweet time. I can hardly wait to see the egg color!

I like the idea of preserving genetic variety, including things like tufts.. others can work and deal with it.

Had tufted, rumpless araucanas in both bantam and LF. deliberately bred NN with tufted just to see what effect NN had on it lol.... the naked area does cover some of the tuft buds, causing most tuft quality to be poor and very vulnerable to damage by pecking. Those that manage to have 'full' tufts until adulthood had something more earrings.. they dangled down and jiggled with head movements instead of mostly static on most birds. Might sound cute but actually it was a pitiful look and once those were released to mingle, all eventually lost one or both tufts.

I will admit to liking the non tufted birds better, in both the mixes and pures... shhh... lol

Wer'e in the same boat... waiting for several pullets out of a possible O gene carrier roo to start laying.... still have a month or two to go, their combs are still mostly 'dry'..

So I have 48 new Naked Necks. Various breeding groups including a few Calico ( hopefully they'll be mottled). And a few Green Egg Laying Naked Necks ( hopefully) at least a few hatched from green eggs.

... and just read the first line of your post "I ate my hatching results". ACK!

I think sometimes one must be careful which treads one reads simultaneously.
