Thanks Kass. I understand about the eggs. I too am not satisfied with my fertility rate so I haven't been offering eggs either.
Very very tempting.

SCORE CARD: 10/05/2015.
'Possums: 3
Me: 0. We'll see how this goes after tonight setting a second trap.

I didn't get my preditor last night either, but it didn't get any more of my chickens either.

I despise chicken predators and go to extreme lengths to prey on them!!!  :smack

Guess I may have to sit out there all night one night, and hope I don't shoot myself try g to get them. It's not that I'm afraid of the shotgun, but my eyesight isn't what it used to be. Diabetes and other issues prevent me from seeing as well and the target is off to my eye. Plus the fact I was never an avid hunter. Something I could do if i ever needed to do it just not something I've ever enjoyed either.

I guess though sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Kassaundra You have always posted wonderful photographs. I have visited your gallery and looked. But this last batch is spectacular ! What has raising chickens done to you ? It has brought out the best CRAAZYNESS.

'Possums are one of the easiest predators to ambush, especially if you have a night light near their target. They don't generally come out to feed 'til well after midnight...usually around 2 or 3 AM. Despite their playing hell on chickens, they'd much rather find the leftovers of other predators. A .410 is plenty powerful to put them down but even if you use a .10 gauge shotgun...always crush their heads with something along the lines of a wooden ball bat. They can play dead ('possum) with the best of 'em.

Good luck!!!

EDIT: to say, try to have the wind/breeze in your face to minimize the prospect of the rascals scenting you.

havahart traps work really well for possums. if they've been eating the eggs, just put some eggs inside the trap and either put it inside where it's been getting into or right over their entrance location.

Other times just do nightly rounds with a flashlight to bust them in action.

I'm not real good with color names, but do any of the brown ones look like they may have some pattern to them? Reason I ask getting alot with the partridge look to them. Some that as far ado know have no partridge coloring in their background. .

Yes, but I'm not sure what would be considered a "pattern" that might end up partridge - Sweetie has dark speckles, some of the boys have blocks of color in patterns... I guess I'm just too inexperienced.

So sorry for all your predation. I'll be thinking "DEAD possum" thoughts for you each night - maybe the universe will hear me.
