Naked Neck/Turken Thread

My concern is that Weesie might be a threat to your entire flock. I strongly encourage you to do the deed.

I'm going to do it this weekend when I cull my last (horribly annoying little stinker) Silkie cockerel. I find that it's easier for me to perform these culls when I'm already in the mindset of butchering other birds. All of the encouragement I've gotten here to 'do the right thing' for my flock has helped me to get into the proper frame of mind, so I'm ready. (I'm still a work in progress.

Thanks everyone!

I have noticed that my big NN girl has a very red skin. is it hormones (she is 7 months old) or I should be concerned? her crop is like a big ball, as usual. I have just wormed her and there are no bugs on her skin. the other pullets are ok only a cockerel has a bit redder skin.

Provided you are certain it's a pullet/hen, It's perfectly normal for some NN females to display vivid red necks, especially if they are getting a lot of sun.

I haven't been on Greek soil for many, many year but unless something has changed, I think some of the islands are still very sunny this time of year.

EDIT: Sorry...I posted before I saw Kassaundra's post.

thank you anyway.

I live in salamina, the island that belongs to piraeus. it is still sunny here but not too hot, so my chickens spend some time enjoying sunshine. this particular pullet has a naked part on her chest so she looks redder than she is (she is white).

Here are a couple of pics to show how the red can change in the girls, the two bottom pics are the same bird Reba, all my nn change colors (darken or lighten the red) all the time, but Reba has always been the most dramatic, She will be as red as a roo some days and others a fleshy pink, or a fleshy pink w/ bright red cheeks and comb.

She's lovely! I hope my red-feathered pullet named Reba proves as great a beauty and as good a mother.

I don't have predators like you do but I need to keep small chicks with mother closed because there are cats walking around. although they are not starving they would kill chicks for fun.
That is the problem that I have. My run is about 40 feet long made of chain link and the chicks wander outside until they are too big for the openings.

phil asked how many hatched this season, 3 survived out of 13 hatchlings. Remember I tried to stop the broodies by removing the eggs but the tiny girls, Silkie and Serama/NN hid their clutch so all chicks were a surprise. So the last chick to hatch in the picture with the tiny hen could be a bantam mix as I am not a good chicken mama except for observation, shelter and safety, good food and clean water. I do not keep records any longer.

DesertChic seems to me any birds that had symptoms of illness and recovered did not live a full life. Maybe this would help when you cull. And as far as motivation, weLLL when i have a job to do which is taking longer than usual to complete waiting for the perfect moment gives such a swift impact. Just today i finished a job that I have been delaying for days When finished, I wonder why I put it off for so long. Crazy isn't it ?
