Okay....Just one more photo. This is Dutch @ 17 weeks. His weight is toward the higher end in my flock, and he's got decent breast and thigh musculature, but I admit that it's his feathering that's winning me over. I'm a sucker for all that white...and then he's got some red barring too. I'm hoping to keep this one too.

Perhaps it's old age and/or senility but lately I've been looking at the Dominiques and thinking about crossing them into my meat/capon line. Not so long ago, such a thought would have triggered my gag reflex but they have seriously twiddled my interest of late.

Certainly don't need them...just wanting them.

@CackleHatchery breeds and raises their own. They have a user here in BYC.

I think Ideal breeds and raises their own also.

So a small mix from both might be different blood lines. Maybe

put some cayenne pepper in her feed and good luck. NNs recover quickly. mine were coughing up pure blood and a week later they started to lay regularly.

I actually put cayenne pepper in their fermented feed on a regular basis, and apple cider vinegar and probiotics in their water.

Thanks. She's still limping today, hopping around on just one foot. I've examined her foot multiple times and can't find anything wrong with it other than that one cut, which I've already treated. I'm guessing she strained or sprained it, and if so it should heal in a few days. She started eating last night, but hasn't shown much interest in food so far today. I'm watching her closely, but I think she'll pull through.

@Pensmaster , I have a lot fewer birds than DesertChic, but I had 7 cockerels in my hatchery chick group. I weighed them every single week and graphed it all out (very CDO!), and kept the largest ones. They are 20 weeks. The primary flock leader is 7.7 lbs, other two "backup" boys are 6.7 lbs and 6.3 lbs. They are built like bricks/tanks.

I've admired the Dominques for a while too...though there probably aren't many breeds I haven't coveted to some extent at one time or another. I got the Stromberg's catalog in the mail this past week and proceeded to show my husband photos of the Dark Cornish, Buff Brahma, and White Jersey Giants as potentials for future breeding projects. He handled it very well, but I've been with him too long and could see the panic in his eyes behind that poker face. As far as he's concerned, 75 chickens is the absolute maximum number we should EVER have. I asked him if that number includes chicks since they're so small. I mean...you can't really count chicks...and what about the transition birds that are approaching butchering age. You can't really count those either. Right?

I've heard quite a bit about them. Hardy lay well and due to fewer feathers they grow fast. Besides being interesting to look at. Do they live up to all that? Is it a good dual purpose bird?
