Naked Neck/Turken Thread

only 24...?

how about "culling" weeds/brush to make room for MORE PENS! not helping am I? lol

what's cooking in the bator?

My chickens have pretty much consumed all of the weed and brush in my backyard where they free range. I'm constantly amused to see them stretching their necks as far as possible through the lattice surrounding my garden in an effort to consume whatever weeds and nutgrass is growing there. From time to time I bring some of my most manageable girls into the garden to help me weed. And I've actually started considering ways to utilize the unusable parts of our property, which is pretty much terrifying my husband. My comment of, "Honey, I think we should get a backhoe," was initially greeted with enthusiasm, followed almost instantly by a look of dread and panic.

My hatch: They're basically going to be barnyard mixes since I never got around to setting up breeding pens. My 11-lb dominant NN rooster spent a lot of time mating my Biel girls and my White Rock girls, so their eggs make up over half of this hatch. I may get a few pure Biels out of it, or I may not. My Ameraucana mix rooster managed to sneak in a couple sessions with the girls too, so it will be like Xmas for me. The rest of the eggs come from my EEs, a few from my Barred Rocks, a few from my Australorps, a couple from my NN/Cochin girl, and one from my largest Dorking mix girl who's about to be culled for eating everyone else's eggs. It will be interesting to figure out who fathered all of those eggs, but ultimately I'm moving towards making everybody a NN.

Haha! Tractors/big machines are fun to play with..... there is a place out by Las Vegas where you can pay to just play around in them.

That's a very exciting batch of eggs, be sure to show us pictures of the results please?

my chickens converted their runs into desert, lol. I must pick some weeds from the neighboring land and some extra leaves from my vegetable garden to give them some treats. I tried to bring some of them (1 at a time) into my garden but they run straight away where they shouldn't so I gave it up.

I think we all are waiting for your surprise chicks

Happened to see a lavender modern game bantam chick, was surprised such a thing existed so I grabbed it. Crossed him with a cuckoo bantam NN and then bred the siblings from this together.

Great cross for some birds with long legs and necks lol

I can only be jealous again. I cannot find lavender chickens here.

btw, what colours make lavender?

Lavender is a single and recessive mutant gene. It dilutes both black and red/gold pigments. It breeds true, not like the blue with its black/blue/splash genetics.. lavender bred with lavender breeds all lavenders.

For solid lavender like my chicks, you need a solid black chicken then add lavender.

There are too many names for lavender on other color patterns.. Isabel(usually a lavender on a buff bird), Isabella, porcelain, etc.. I don't know the Greek name for this gene/color... will try showing more pictures

Mille fleur d'Uccle(no lavender) Porcelain d'Uccles(exact same color except lavender is added) See how the lavender dilutes all colors to a soft pastel shade:

mille:

porcelain- exactly the same color and pattern as above but with lavender "added":

Isabella brahma- it is partridge with lavender added:

Isabel/isabella leghorn- brown or red duckwing pattern:

Isabel brahma- this one is a buff brahma plus lavender:

Dang it, Kev! You did it again! Now I want to get some lavender chickens for my breeding adventures.

I did find some Lavender Australorp hatching eggs online. Hmm......

Quote: At least for now, I'm restricting the chickens to alternating paddocks, in order to let the ground recover and also have the option of planting specifically for them (forage wise). Otherwise I won't have any nice ground for them to graze pretty soon.

I just decided to let Apoc out. He's not in a paddock or anything, but I just couldn't face keeping him locked up any more. He'll likely scuffle through the fences, but I'm just going to let him do his solo thing. I have plans to give him the Cream Legbar pullets that aren't good auto sexing (and so aren't candidates for further CL breeding), so I can get NN CLs. But that won't be for about 5 months...

I know, isn't it totally evil?!

KEV beautiful birds, what is the source of the pictures ? Were they all yours or did you import the photos for demonstration.

I had some porcelain d'Uccles and they were very pretty but very flighty. Even I want more of this color just because you posted them. drat

DesertChic be sure to get those Lavender Australorp hatching eggs so we can share them some day !

A friend gave me a large trash bag full of wild mustard weeds and my flock made them disappear within and hour. I rarely let them out of their run since they also devour my garden boo hoo

Just finished the first candling of my incubated eggs. Only one of my three Biel girls provided me with fertile eggs, and she's the one that was most aggressively mated by my NN rooster, and a little less by my Ameraucana rooster. This could get interesting.

All three of my White Rock girls gave me fertile eggs, again either from the same two roosters and my Biel girls, or possibly by one of my Biel boys....not likely, but possible.

And the two NN girls I collected eggs also showed good development, so I'm hopeful and optimistic.
