Naked Neck/Turken Thread

The broody mom killed 3 chicks and hurt several more

The only reason I set these eggs was for them, and one outright rejected them, the other acted like she accepted them, but obviously did not. So looks like I'm brooding more in the house

I had the idea of putting sock clothes on the two nakeds from day one, that did not work at all. They acted like they were paralyzed on one side I gave it a day and a half thinking I would out wait them, but they were being sooooo dramatic, I just took them off, now they act like nothing is wrong at all. When I clothe them after the others are used to them naked it creates drama, so I thought I'd outsmart them!!!

Okay guys, Miss Phyllis went broody, but that poses some logistic problems, how does a momma chicken keep her babies warm w/o feathers. The answer of course is a special maternity dress, like that wasn't obvious :lau This is prototype one. It is the leg of one of Gary's thermal undies and some wool scraps.
This made my day.

I might be the only person on the planet that feels this way, but I HATE MY BRINSEA. I saved for sure 12, 4 more are in critical condition in ICU
I think your incubator is possessed...

sorry to hear that and good luck to the little ones.

if I were you I wouldn't use that incubator any more. it is too much stress and birds with poor health. but you are not me and you will do whatever you like.
I honestly would as well. I think you have enough evidence of failure with this one (I'm presuming you calibrated everything, right?). What a nightmare...

I have just lost 1 of my NN girls. one moment she was eating and the next moment she was dead. I was in the next door run feeding other chickens when I heard a flying noise, I turned and she was dead. any idea what happened? she didn't look sick and she was a good layer, laid her last egg today. RIP Alina

Oh, I'm so sorry. Do you have the ability to do a necropsy?

I have zero experience with NN's, so I am coming to the experts. Super sweet bird about 4-5 weeks. Cockerel??? Bought as a pullet, but you know how that goes. Gotta love those soft, sweet eyes.

Breeder or hatchery? I see you're in Utah. I was going to say they look like some that I've hatched. But I really doubt that now cause I'm in Arkansas.

April hatch is over: not keeping any if these. I'll keep a few from the May hatch coming up.

Had almost 77% hatch rate. Working on a better hatch rate. Trying for a 90 to 95% at least.

If only 4-5 weeks old, I vote cockerel.

He's handsome, and looks like he's sweet. Can you keep him?

Farm supply store. I have no idea which hatchery they pull from.

I'm guessing at the 4-5 weeks. I picked up some birds from the pullet bins 3.5 weeks ago. This one was mostly fluffy down with the wings coming in. I can't keep him if it's a boy. City requires us to be on 1/2 acre or larger to own a rooster and we are on .40

. This bird is so super sweet I'm really sad about it. I am lucky that the farm supply will take him back and try to re-home him - I just shouldn't let myself get attached so quickly.

Pullet's my guess.

Ok - So there are a couple cockerel votes and a pullet vote. As I am trying to learn more about the breed, I understand they develop differently. Besides the pink larger waddles and comb (which in other birds I've had was immediate give away), what else says "Cockerel" to you? Or 1TurkenLover, what says "Pullet". The only thing that I was clinging to as "pullet" was that the tail was growing in the same as the other ladies - where other cockerels I've had seemed to not grow their tail feathers for awhile. Again, I don't know how these guys develop and that's what I am trying to learn. I've tried to research and there is not as much info as I'd like.

Thank you guys for taking the time to answer thus far - and for dashing my hopes.
