Naked Neck/Turken Thread

this morning I found emily (hatched in december) on the floor, totally paralyzed and her crop was full. I have no idea what happened. there were no signs of any injury and she was fine lately. I gave her baytril and later I syringed her water with vitamins. her heart was fast beating. I kept giving her water with vitamins every 20-30 minutes and a few hours later she calmed down. she still cannot walk but at least she can move on her own.


she is in the house now, fast asleep. I hope she will get better.

Sounds like an invenomation to me. Do you have any spiders / scorpions / snakes etc... that have neurotoxins?

General supportive care is about all you can do if it is. Hope she pulls through for you.

I second that! When one of my NN roosters was stung by a scorpion he had the same reaction. After a few hours he was back to normal. Since I knew for certain what had happened I administered Benadryl (an antihistamine) dissolved in water to help him fend off the effects of the toxin. I sure hope you have the same luck!

a neighbor of mine asked me a favour to drive her to get some chicks. once I was there I just couldn't resist. these are my new 2 beauties:

I don't think there are poisonous spiders or similar. the night before I found her she ate a centipede and a huge grasshopper. but that is what chickens eat. btw, she looks better. still not back to normal but she has just eaten on her own. and she is very thirsty. she laid an egg yesterday and the shell was not very hard. I also suspect calcium deficiency as my chickens have minute tapeworms so they take the nutrients. both emily and jumbo have hard time laying their first eggs. I am afraid that rats brought some disease into my flock as some of my hens look sleepy.

@Kassaundra, Beautimous is 100% favourite one. And this are my favourite barred chickens-actually they are the only barred chickens I like.

I want to ask something. Do the nakeds carrie the naked neck gene? I mean, their parents were naked necks after all.
If they do carrie it would be great to see nn cornish x cross.

Yes MY nakeds carry the NN gene, but not all nakeds do.

Good to know - while we probably don't have as many scorpions as you do, we certainly have them (and I know to always check my boots before putting my foot in). They make it into the house sometimes. How do you administer the benadryl, and at what dose? (So I know, just in case...)

I pulverized one Benadryl tablet, mixed it with water and sucked up half the solution into a syringe so I could drip it into his mouth. It was a bit of a guessing game as to how much Benadryl to water to use, but since 1 whole tablet is sufficient to treat my smallest dog, which is roughly twice the size of the rooster I treated, I started with 1/2 a pill. If he hadn't recovered so quickly I probably would've administered the remaining half, but luckily he didn't need it.

And thanks for the compliment! This was my first pain-free day in a while so I was pretty darn happy at the time. I don't like being photographed either, but I try to update my online photos yearly.
