Yup - hardly any eggs here either - I had hoped that the new pullets would carry the weight when the older girls slowed down, but that coop is dealing with fowl pox (dry, thank goodness), with some of them affected more than others. Used to be getting about 9 a day from them (12 pullets in there), now getting 2 or 3. It's a coin toss each day as to whether I get anything from all the other older girls, who are all molting. It's ok, I suppose, I always have too many eggs.

HATE that it gets dark so early these days. SO hard to get things done after work.

Then it's just as well that I don't seem to have any eggs to hatch from!!!!

Tomorrow morning I am giving the Speckled Sussex girls who are with Tank to a friend of mine. He loves them very very much, so I hope he'll be distracted and happy with his new GNH girls (and I hope the introduction goes well). I'm going to pull the SS off the roost early tomorrow morning to put them in the transport cage, then pull the GNHs off the roost and put them in the chicken hospital while I deliver the SS. When I get back from the delivery, I'll then do the introductions (and hope that Tank hasn't lost his mind before then) - I don't want it to go unsupervised.

I have read that black peppercorns help fowl pox to dry out in 4-5 days. I gave it to my 2 chicks but I am not sure if that helped or it would have gotten better anyway.

It's actually on its way to resolving (it's been a few weeks) - there's one Cream Legbar pullet who has been hit harder than the rest (number of sores), and she has two on her right lower eyelid, and it had swollen and stuck shut. After reading Kathy's wet pox/dry pox thread, yesterday I got her eye open to check that it was ok - thank goodness it was. I flushed it out with contact lens solution that I had on hand (I've ordered some ophthalmic antibiotic ointment).

(Thanks for the vibes!)

I rearranged many of my birds for breeding purposes and my oldest rooster, Heisenberg, had a REALLY tough time with the changes. After two days of his moping I finally pulled one of his long-time favorite hens out to be with him. It's been over a week...maybe even over two by now...and he's FINALLY accepted the other girls from his coop as "his" and dotes on them accordingly. He spent a lot of time on my lap though, looking for comfort, leading up to his acceptance.

As for winter breeding....yeah, well...that's where chicken math gets the better of me. Hatching eggs is a true addiction for me, and this morning I was greeted by the first hatchling from my current batch of eggs:

This little guy came from my best laying Dorking-mix. I had hoped that Daddy was a NN, but it turned out to be my big boy, Monty, and Ameraucana/White Rock rooster. So far it's still the lone hatchling, but half of the other eggs have pipped, and the other half have been wiggling a lot.

Taking a break from chores, wanted to ask other NN owners - are these bug bites on Sweetie's neck and chest? I was pretty sure they were, but thought I should ask a second opinion. They've been there about a week or so, started by looking like mosquito bites (or maybe ant bites). Now firm, some scabbed (I wonder if they were scratched)... She's acting totally normally and eating well. She's also molting like crazy (as in, cloud of feathers when she shook herself in my lap).

- Ant Farm (there's a REASON that's my handle...)

Edit to add: Dry fowl pox is going around on my property right now. This just didn't look like that to me - but maybe I don't realize what it looks like on skin???

If fowl pox they should get better in 2 ish weeks from onset. They look like dry fowl pox to me, but if not my second guess would be ant bites.

Thanks. I had the same thought - maybe bites, maybe fowl pox. Either is reasonable. I've just only seen fowl pox so far on non-Naked Necks (so haven't seen the skin lesions...)

During this year's molt, I figured out I have two girls that carry mottled. One of them is black with quite a bit white on wings and tail and other one is partridge with just a few spots on her upper leg-this spots look rather millie fleur.

dry pox. put some iodine on scabs. I think black peppercorns work well as my chick's scabs around the eye dried up within 48 hours. his eye was half way closed with a cheesy edge. I also put iodine on the scabs but iodine itself wouldn't work that fast.
