It's so nice to see my molty girls grow back their feathers - they all look like they've just been back form the beauty salon! No pics right now - but Sweetie looks great (though still growing in). And Switch, who lost almost all of her feathers pre-molt because of the fox that almost ate her, looks like she's wearing a silky shiny mink coat.

Haha yea, fresh coat of paint. I'm pretty impressed with one hen in particular, she kept laying eggs well late into this year and then molted very hard- almost all the feathers at once.. she's already starting to lay even though the feathers are just over halfway finished growing.

The GNH with Tank have been laying a bit better (2 a day for a couple days) so I fired up the incubator and started saving (in the hopes of hatching early). Sure enough - they must have a spy looking through he windows - no eggs today.

you are learning the ways of chickens.... Can't set? Tons of eggs. NEED to set? "huh? eggs? No idea what you're squawking about..."

Pullets are laying pretty good. Hens are mixed lot as for laying, that's very normal. This one hen has been an exceptional layer the whole year. Think I will make extra effort to set her eggs and make her offspring top choices as keepers for next season.

AND it's nice when they start laying again after a hard molt. My girl, Pippen, finally started laying again after taking just over 7 weeks off for molt. Her beau, Heisenberg literally stood on the roost to the nesting box she chose, screaming his head off with his wings half raise, guarding her until she was done laying her egg. (I couldn't shake the idea the he was singing the rooster version of "Having my Baby".) Then he escorted her to the feed dish and chased away any other bird that tried to feed at the same time as her while she "replenished" herself. It was one of the craziest things I've ever seen.

I took this photo of Rizzo a few weeks back. She now has 5 pin feathers...FIVE. That's all! And she still lays at least four eggs weighing 2.2+ ounces each week.

I closely examined my two newest NN chicks tonight. I'm about 95% sure that Chick 1 is a cockerel and Chick 2 is a pullet. So......meet

I've been thinking if thinning my birds way down. I've gotten transferred to another store and am gone from dark until dark.

I've thought about selling down to 18 hens and three roosters and keep the youngest babies. My problem is I can't decide which 18 hens I like the best and want to keep. So I haven't tried advertising them for sell yet.

I don't think I'll sell any individual hens until after the rooster go, if I decide to do this.

Anyway I just wanted to tell someone about it, so thanks for listening.
