Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Yesterday I've lost my only turken hen. Three weeks ago she was attacked by a stray dog that somebody left on the river near my house and she came over while chickens were free ranging and she pulled her tail feathers. She did have a small scratch near cloaca but it healed up by the next day and she contiuned laying normaly so I wasn't really worried, but kept an eye on her. Yesterday when I came home from work, mom told me she had 10 cm of some kind of intestine covered in yolk. I haven't seen it neither did she took a picture of her but could it be somehow related to attack? She was young, probably around one year old, but she was a great layer, laying 6/7 eggs a week and never had any other problems with eggs, and like I said, continued laying after the attack and had no problems laying. Also we got two RSL's a while ago and introduced them to a flock on last Wednesday, so exactly one week ago. They were quarantined and seemed to have no problems. Could this be somehow related?
I know that this isn't much info but I want to know if this could be some illness or was she egg-bound, had vent prolapse or something similar. Thanks

Sorry that you lost your Turken hen. :hugs Has anything been done about that stray dog? It could come back for more of your hen's, since it has now found a source of food.

Oh wow Phil. Unfortunately it.. is hard..to tell. It does sound like a coincidence however that this happened now, because she was doing so well after the attack. So sorry!

Thanks, I don't know it is really confusing, especially since it all happened in three hours.
If only I had a picture so I could show you..

Oh no that is so sad!!! It's hard to say, but scar tissue could possibly have caused a thick hard spot that led to a prolapse maybe? Just a guess... Or if a egg broke inside of her... That can happen, too.

So sorry... :hit

Yeah, that is actually what I am thinking. But she really didn't show any abnoramlity in her acting around 12, but my mother found her dead with all of that hanging out and being dead at 3 pm. She must have been hiding that something is wrong with her very good from me.

Yes, dog wasn't actually a stray, but from new neighbours but they don't live very close to us so we didn't recognize it. Dog owner was found- and they were actually fixing the fence when he escaped. And chickens are closed up in coop from then since we also started a garden.

Now to make things even worse yesterday I lost my other, 8 year old hen-again when nobody was home. When I came back she was laying in grass all wet, cold and stiff, but what also suprised me she was laying on her back?! No bite marks or anything neither were my other two hens and rooster upset, so I guess not a predator but what is going on these days?! Could she have some kind of stroke. I mean she was 8 years old, but she was acting completely normal the day before and even layed an egg.
ETA: I should also mention it was raining whole day heavily yesterday.

My rooster is really sad. He crowed all night and this whole day until I left for work. Like I said in previous post he lost his both girls that he really liked actually- he didn't really care for any other hens that we ever had except for these two.

On other, brighter side, my two new RSL hens both strated laying today! And rooster showed some interest in them and even showed them where to lay. Good thing we got them- we would be both without hens and eggs.

Aww..another. Yes, 8 years old is getting up there for a chicken. By chance, do you have weasel around there? They don't eat the carcass, they kill, then suck the blood. Hmm..you did say no bite marks. ?? So sorry...but glad you got those other two. Now your rooster will pay more attention to them. Fertile eggs. I was always excited to be able to keep a rooster for a while, until their crowing got out of control. I had my own eggs to hatch. It was great fun when I had an EE roo to my Nn. Got some pretty cute babies, and that's when I got my blue egg, a..puffy cheeks...when one of his babies grew up.

Wow Phil, that really sucks.
All wet, kinda sounds like either a slobbery dog (a retriever that's bred to "soft mouth" for retrieving can still squeeze enough to kill without leaving puncture marks) or a snake. Do you have snakes around there? If they try to take something that turns out to be too big to swallow they will spit it back out all wet....

We did have some, but very rarely but that was like 10 years ago, maybe even more and they were never on our property. And she was not killed I really took a good look at her and she was all wet from the rain so I could see any wound easily. I looked the head especially, but her head was also still red so I don't really think it was weasel. I actually think it was from her old age and she was quite big but what a coincidence to happen right after my other died. I do want to hatch from my eggs but I have never had a hen go broody and I don't have incubator and, honestly, don't want to deal with it. But I did discover last week that my neighbour has cochin bantams-and now she hatched chicks so I might get something from her.

Oh... maybe she died of broken heart from losing her friend... :(

No, I don't know what kind of a dog could jump 2 meter high fence and get out of it and only kill one hen, I highly doubt it, and snakes here practicly don't exist. I really don't think anything killed her- something must've happend with her.
