Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I thought I would check here first to see if this is common for NN. Oakley my roo is not doing well, I am about to bring him in from the coop, but have waited because I am afraid that his Annies (his 5, just laying pullets) will be overworked by the Delawares that they share the coop with. In the mean time Oakly is having trouble walking, he walks like I do, stiff legged, from the hip and sits on the ground when he can. (I have a bad back and arthritis in the hips) I went out to take pictures (will down load them once the battery recharges) and found him like this this morning. He is 6 months old, a big, sweet boy, still learning the job of head roo. I gathered him in my lap and I massaged his legs and thighs, which he enjoyed, and the muscles were really tight, not just firm and his knees were stiff. If I tried to stretch and flex the legs, they were stiff. I checked his feet and found no signs of bumble foot or sores. He sat in my lap while I did that and just dozed while I rubbed the smooth skin on the crop and under the wings, he just relaxed. He is eating and drinking, and his weight feels ok. His legs are smooth, the scales are sticking out.He was vaccinated for Mareks as a chick. DH who normally puts them to bed at night said he has problems jumping up and into the coop (elevated 18" or so) and is needing to walk up the ramp. He is always the last one in. Any ideas what's going on w/ his legs? I really don't know even what to look up. I am going to get the dog kennel clean up so I can isolate him if need be. I don't see any problems with any of the other birds in his coop.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, what you're describing is not normal. I'd post this in the "Emergencies / Diseases / Injuries and Cures" section just because this thread doesn't get a lot of traffic. I don't know if chickens have growing pains like people and dogs do, but it's possible. My only other guess, and I am guessing with both of these, is that he jumped down off of something and miscalculated the distance, jarring his legs. I'd continue doing what you're doing.

ETA: Check out this thread...it's just something that came to mind right after I hit the send button: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=401015

Thanks-
I checked out the thread, and the possibility of a B vitamin deficiency is bouncing around in my brain. Will make scrambled eggs for the afternoon treat and add a small amount of B complex vitamin. Check on line for poultry vitamins in the meantime.
Thanks

You can give him "Poly-Vi-Sol" infant vitamins, but get it without the iron. It's sold at Costco, CVS, etc.. I had some birds with vitamin B-2 deficiency (the feed store owner took a bag of feed to UCDavis to have it checked out because customers were returning dead or deformed chicks by the dozens, found out it was a bad batch of feed) and gave them the extra vitamins, they turned around real fast. Their legs were growing away from their bodies, outwards. Some of the returned chicks were so bad that they had to be euthanized.

Hello to everyone,

I have 4 NN and I love mine. I have quite a few other breeds but cant part with the Turkens. They lay the best eggs! I weighed some today just for fun and each one was 2.5 except for one-- the winner weighed in at 2.7. I will be back to visit and learn about the others who enjoy them

Greensearcher, have you checked for lice? No offense meant but sometimes especially this time of year the lice are out and about and can do a bird in quick. Turn him upside down and check his vent and under his wings for them.

well good morning every one!!!!!! who loves Naked Necks

I've been scrolling through this thread trying to figure out the color of my naked neck chick "Lolly". She has different coloring from the ones posted on here and was wondering if anyone could help

Wanted to share some pics of my two NN roos.

This one is unfortunately very mean to other chickens and I am thinking of getting rid of him. He has a few fluffs on his neck but I assume he is still NN?

This one is his little brother that is just starting to get real tall and pretty. Just waiting for those tail feathers. Love the contrast between the bleach head feathers and the purple head
