Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Well, it seems I have started a lively discussion. I appreciate the info on the shade cloth and foot baths.
88 degrees here today, and it isn't even April.

However, I was just discussing why I chose NN's and my wyandottes that died. However, since we are all being so
truthful and admitting we have breeds other that NN's, I will admit I also own partridge rocks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, that feels so much better telling the truth. HA!

My ownership of partridge rocks is similar to yours pgpoultry. Please take these 4 hens. "I don't want them anymore,
and 'coons already got 2." I'm just a sucker for a big fat hungry hen!

My birds used the ultimate shade cloth last summer. They just spent most of the day under the house. Kind of like
the Beverly Hillbillies or Pettycoat Junction, except the chickens were under the house instead of on the roof!

I didn't get a lot of eggs for a couple months, but only the NN's and rocks survived.

Not my fault those Wyandottes are here! They were shoved upon me and the person drove off before I could say 'no thanks'! I swear! SWEAR!

OK they are beautiful but they are being improved upon anyways, with your help.... (adding NN to 'em)

Well, nobody's perfect anyways...

I've had many different breeds thru the years, but when it came time to massively reduce the flock, naked necks were almost the only thing left. Could not ever part with this breed as long as I can keep chickens. That said, I do admire some other breeds too, just not as much.

p.s. your little Morticians are cute. Would like to see how they grow up.

I have several breeds of chickens, and am getting some NNs with my order next month--------can't wait! The only concern I have is how they'll do in a cold Indiana winter? I don't have any type of heat in my coop, and my other chickens do just fine, but with a bare neck, the NNs must get chilled more easily.

They'll be FINE. Honestly they're very hardy as long as you have a decent coop to keep them out of drafts. No heat needed.

I had a NN pullet start laying in the dead of winter. Funnily enough my brahma (which is supposed to be a big heavy bird that is winter hardy) was one of the biggest winter wimps I had (I think only my phoenix who spent the whole winter on the roost looking mournful was worse). Someone needed to tell my white leghorns that they're a Mediterranean breed and aren't winter hardy because they were always the first out the pop door no matter the temperature (even at -20)!

Yes I too have other breeds....see my sig. Line....
But like most of you my NN are and always will be the best in the barn yard. They laid all winter from 10 hens we were getting 7 to 8 eggs aday even on the coldest days..
I love my NN's and I spread the word to anyone that will listen
