Kassaundra- that's a great question actually. Flower summed it up nicely and that's an awesome link up there- thanks for posting it. The name for the breed is Naked Neck or Transylvanian Naked Neck in some countries.
Mixes are extremely common, maybe more common than 'show stock'/purebreds. It's also pretty common for the mixes to be sold as turken(which a very popular but a slang or non-official name) or naked neck, as if they were THE breed. Similar to lots of EE being sold as Araucana or Ameraucana. Some easy tell tale signs are feathering on the legs or hint of a crest.
Hatchery stock usually are rather similar in type, but they do show some mixing as legs of every color shows up in them(standard calls for yellow in all colors except for black which are to have black legs), along with unrecognized colors. Other than that, they are very good birds for pets or production. It was a hatchery turken that got me hooked on all naked necks- she was a huge, very mellow, friendly hen and laid huge eggs.
p.s. yes, sonic screwdrivers are cool!
greenSearcher- would love updates on the Del and SS crosses. I'm wondering if the Del crosses may rival the brahma crosses in size... And thanks for posting that excellent link.
featherz- I agree with others, that sometimes a turken pullet will have a big comb so early and fool everyone for the longest time.. But I'm seeing rooster shiny feathers on Mr. Centerchicken. Has a lot on his cap, some on back, saddles and wing. He looks like he may be evenly colored as an roo.. often the shiny feathers are either much lighter or darker, on him it seems same shade as the body feathers. He probably will be a handsome rooster.
I'm seeing a few rooster shiny feathers on the last one.. there's one on his shoulder area.
