Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Gordon is very tall, NewTo Farming, with huge, thick grey legs.

His neck and wattles are hard. They do not feel like those of a standard NN, and feel more like moulded rubber.

He has certainly raised a few eyebrows. At about 5 months he is probably not fully grown and does not have spurs as yet. I've only heard him crow once, normally he makes a 'honking' noise. a bit of 'what nightmares are made of'.

Wow! he is only 5 months old? Holy cow! No, he is probably not done growing yet!!! His legs are really thick! I love him! Is he a gentle boy? Because if not, he could sure put a hurting on you!
I bet his crow is extra loud so it might be a good thing if he honks instead, even if he does generate nightmares!

I can't wait to see how big he gets when fully mature. Do you find NN boys in general mature more slowly than others?
Thanks for sharing his pic. I really like him!!

Lisa, his crow was a bit muted.....not at all what you would expect from the look of him.

Gordon is a bit of a pest of an adolescent male around the girls. He can run so fast that he can catch anybody. He's fine with people, though....otherwise I doubt he would be safe to keep! I think his slow maturing is down to the Brahma in him.

My real NN roo. ,Mort, matured fairly fast, though he didn't crow much to start with as there were many bigger males around. Mort is now alpha male, so, though smaller than the Brahmas, he can stand his ground (and crow a lot!).

Gordon still gets pecked by some of the smaller hens....they just must not have noticed the size of him.

Hopefully Gordon will settle down with the girls once he gets through the crazy teenage stage and then be your gentle giant.

It does seem some of the smallest chickens have the biggest attitude. I have the smallest, tiniest silkie that thinks she is queen of the coop. Poor girl. LOL My NN girls just look at her like, "you have got to be kidding, right?" It is quite funny.

Grrr - what is wrong with me?
Just a few months ago while browsing on BYC I saw Naked Necks and thought to myself - wow what ugly chickens !!! Went to a chicken show 2 weeks ago and saw NN chicks for sale - resisted because I did not want to go through the work of raising chicks and then integrating them into my flock. Guess what - tracked down the seller from the show and picked up 2 chicks on Sunday and now I'm sorry I didn't get a few more. They are SO CUTE but everyone that I show them to pauses and politely says "interesting or different". Just give 'em time I say......

old*cowboy :

Thanks for the comments. The blue one is actually my least favoritte, with the head bonnet and loose feathering.

I love your crested blue, the bonnet gives her style and I love the darker legs, I am not fond of yellow legs, long story childhood trauma. She is the kind of NN I'll be looking for this coming spring. ( I don't show and could care less about SOP, just want pretty and unique birds to eat bugs, lay eggs and tend the garden.)

Congratulations on your new NNs!

My husband convinced me to try some when we were ordering chicks this spring and now we have quite a few. They are great birds and really good layers! As for the polite pauses, my MIL came over to see the chickens yesterday. She looked at my favorite NN (Bonnie, black tailed red) and said, "Now that's just ugly." WHAT?!? Are you kidding me? She's gorgeous! Bonnie had to sit on my lap after my MIL left for some special one on one time.

Enjoy!

I am planning to get a couple of NN girls this coming spring, but for now I have psuedo NN's, my EE's have plucked each other's beards smooth out. They look sort of like NN's, but just a smaller naked area. They don't peck or pluck any other feathers, they have plenty of things to do, plenty of space, plenty of protien, guess they just have NN envy!

Here are pictures or my first NN chicks, and then what they look like now.

And now all but Black Annie looks like this

When I hatched eggs from the original 5 NN hens, I got 3 red girls, 2 NN and one not NN, lots of white and black boys, obviously the Delaware is the daddy, one barred NN, not sure of gender yet, though I am leaning towards girl, Black Annie and the Delaware. Will post pictures in the next week or so. They boys are good sized, and the girls are typically petite. My one not NN, looks like a production red. Wonder if that is the common breed used by the hatcheries to breed their Naked Neck stock.
