NN in tree hiding from the snow! This is Bruisie. I used to think that discoloration on her face was a bruise, but I am thinking it's her normal skin color? It's been there for months.

I think they are great, too.

Bruisie certainly has taken the 'facial flush' to another level!

Heh, yes. I saw it when she was about 8 weeks old, and assumed she had caught her head in a fence or a feeder and bruised it. She is now about 20 weeks old and still looks like that, so who knows? She seems quite healthy and rather bratty for a chicken.

Love the name too, featherz.

Bruisie might have what's called "gypsy face"- dark pigmentation around the face and sometimes upper neck with rest of body a normal color. Some breeds are supposed to have this, such as sumatras, not so rare on birchen modern games. But, this is also usually found on dark colored birds- blacks or birchens... trying to remember if I've seen gypsy face on another color like your hen.

Look at underside of her wing and also the vent.. have bit of suspicion that she may have fibromelanotic, what makes the dark skin on silkies. Fibro gets a little weird sometimes, I've had some where the only evidence of it was on their skeleton or innards- why I mentioned the vent, if the inside looks gray or dark, that's another possible hint of it. I had a NN chick with very transparent and normal skin but it was easy to see his neck bones and skull were black. Skin on inside of the wing can be thin on some birds, if her bones are black, it would make the wing skin seem darker.

I'll check the next time I pick her up. She's a bit of a brat, so not sure when that will be. She likes to run behind me and peck at my barn boots if I don't have treats.

Hoping she'll calm down when she starts laying. Her hatchmates do not have the same pigmentation. It seems to have just popped up one day, so I started calling her bruisie.. but a normal bruise will change colors eventually! LOL.

Congrats also to Nava - finally a NN picture of the week!

kay so i baught a turkin from a hatcherie "she" was guriteed to be female but of course was a male. then i showed her at county fair and judge laughed and said why isnt he in the mixed class. cause apperently he looked like a turkin cornish cross. he had very broad chest and pea comb and looked like he could attack at any moment...which he did to my mom so we sold him after fair. could he have been a cross
