Naked Neck/Turken Thread

I agree with you but so far I have not had any luck with keeping more than on in each pen with their very own girls. sigh

I am so sad thinking about how I have more then one rooster and I also have several more hatches to go until i am finished with what I want to start with for breeding. I don't want to get rid of any chicken just because it is a rooster. I actually find the roosters to be the most beautiful, and I love to hear them crow!

My husband won't let me build more then what we have, and I would only have room to separate them up into three coops and three runs. Right now no one is outside. I have the first hatch that Camo came from, and then a second hatch that have week old cochins. I have showgirl and shizzles incubating now. I will then probably have one last hatch... and then be done. My next step will be to breed what I've got once they grow. I hope I can handle the roosters I end up with :) I could easily get rid of them, but would prefer to keep them :)

I am hoping since they will be raised together, that they will get along

I know mine got along. Actually even the older rooster is fine with the younger ones for now. And they are crowing (5 months old). I think as long as they grow up together most of the time they are fine (barring some exceptions) and sometimes you'll find a laid back full grown rooster that will work too, but that is more rare.

I am still getting rid of my extras because I plan on doing breeding projects.

I was thinking if I could keep most of the roos, that maybe I could separate out certain hens for breeding and use AI for what ever my goal was at the time. I know eventually I will have to get rid of some roos and hens :(

I think what I need to take into consideration are, my breeding goals, the ages and breeds of the birds and of course how much can I afford. So since I have a very varied flock of sizes and breeds, it is difficult to have too many roosters per hen. I really do not like the males when they are young and randy. Actually it is their behavior that is hard to take. They are very attractive and all that but I hate to see my hens abused .

Right now I have four males to 18 females and many chicks to grow up and out. So I am sorry to see this subject because I usually have a difficult time dealing with it. ugh !

I have never bred before, so I don't know what it will be like. I know I won't like what you are describing, if the hens are being abused.

I was going to wait and see what I end up with after the hatches and then decide where I want to go from there. So far I have only had two incubations and got four out of the first and five out of the second. I have one NN, one mix cochin/silkie, and seven cochin that are all blue, but one male that is partridge ( I think.. because it is getting a few white feathers around the neck). I have a few barred cochin and the shizzles and showgirls incubating right now. Who knows how many will hatch out of the fifteen developing. The ones incubating are bbs, and blue/black and buff barred.

Sooo looks like I have mostly a blue trend going.

edit to say one of the blues is actually a mottled :)

I didn't like them at first, but I kept reading this thread. After looking at them sooo much and reading how great they are and disease resistant...I couldn't help but fall in love with their weird looks :)

I read the history of NNs on someone's blog and it is very interesting! I don't know if I got it off of this thread but here it is...http://breedsavers.blogspot.com/2011/05/naked-necks-chickens-that-looks-like.html

well i ve always liked they when i was young i used to go to my ant and she had so many nn and it was in costa rica

I hadn't seen them before. Really I hadn't seen them in person until my baby hatched :) I had a showgirl, but they look different then the turkens.

I really love them now!
