Naked Neck/Turken Thread

My almost seven week old NN got attacked by his hatch mate, cochin boy, today

. I hoped since they were growing up together, things would be alright, but I had to separate them. Aren't they a bit too young to start fighting?

I had them and what I hope to be two girls outside today when I walked up on the fight. I have the instigator and one girl outside in my dog house coop with an ecoglow and the other two inside for tonight. I hope the two outside will be OK, it is suppose to get down to 54 degrees tonight. My house stays 72 and they haven't used the ecoglow for weeks now. This will be the first night out for any of them. I had planned on putting all four of them out to get them used to the cooler temps.

Are they all the same age ? You would think that they are too young but chickens have made the term pecking order famous for a reason. Even if you introduce chicks to a bunch of chicks who are a bit older they very well can be some pecking until everyone knows their place. I have noticed that if you want to introduce a new bird never put only one in with a flock with an established order. I have better luck when I add at least three at a time. There may be some fussiness but at least one single bird will not be ganged up on. Since i am interested in adding and subtracting or adjusting my birds I try to move them around every few months.

Next you do not want to keep them apart for to long because the adjustment will only be more traumatic. Both NNs and Cochins are fairly calm breeds and should be OK once there is a winner of top position. I have never had a Cochin but that is what I have read about the breed.

Hi! I have two turkens and love them! I am looking for some eggs. Does anyone near NY have eggs? Thanks, I read this forum all the time..lurker I guess.

I have NN, but my 7 NN hens are in with 13 other hens so it's a cr*pshoot what will pop out of the egg.. :P Will hopefully be hatching some NN soon and I usually have a baby NN roo or two to give away if you want to make your own! :)

Yes, they are the same age and hatched together. They have been together from the start. They didn't have any problems until I put them outside. The cochin won't leave the NN alone. The NN will back away and hide, but the cochin tracks him down and wants to pull on his comb.

Going outside is a whole new world. New rules. Kind of like when a baby walks, all the rules have to be retaught. In the case of chickens they are the age that the "official" pecking order is established. There can be some pretty vigorous go tos during this time. Watch for injures and treat to hide any blood. You have a small group, but that doesn't mean their won't be a super dominant one and the others may strive to bump it out of the position. Next round of fighting is when both boys get their hormones, then with only 2 hens, things will get wild. To keep the ladies happy, I would advise lots more girls for sex or completely isolating the boys except for breeding. Unless you plan on a chicken Ft Leavenworth, that will be a challenge. At least now you have planning time. The hormones arrive around 12-16 weeks. I have 16 hens for my EE roo, and 15 hens for my sexlink roo. He just discovered the ladies and things have settled down since the girls have started to lay. Even with 16 girls, my older hens are showing wear and tear, PJ is quite generous in his attention to his ladies.

Very vigorous boys you have!! :)

I have five chicks at 3 weeks and twelve eggs in the incubator. I am hoping to get more girls from them. I had not planned on splitting the roosters up if I only had a few. I was hoping the hatch mates would get a long. I guess I have to reconfigure my coop plans and convince hubby to add another coop and run.

Yes! I know it is bad.....I already want barred and crele! I don't know why chickens are so addicting! I only have one little guy and I see lots of runs in my future for more NNs. I just want to breed him to my cochins and shizzles and showgirls ( if the shizzles and showgirls hatch), but I need some barred and crele NNs too. I want to breed him to everything!!!!!!!!!!!!! Since he is lavender, I don't know what colors to breed him to because I don't have any black or lavender chickens.

I think that you mean sizzle. I have tried to have a plan and over time have experimented with different breeds. Since eggs are one reason I have chickens, I have different breeds for that and then since I like Easter Eggers for their fine qualities of good production and personality I decided to crossbreed. After all showgirls, easter eggers and most sex link birds are crossbreeds. Then Dipsy Doodle Do and her fine mix of black skinned crested flock came into view. Well those are the ones that I am planning for now. For those you either need Lisa,s eggs or the many different breeds to create (breed) your own. Breeding is so much fun because birds are fun and reproduce quickly, you can teach your children a lot when you raise gardens and animals and your own food supply is safer than what the global industry manufactures.
