#1 & #3 are either hatchery barred rocks or marans (leg colour on hatchery birds is frequently not accurate).

#2 is a barred rock; note the yellow legs.

You didn't include photos of #4 or #5.

Dominique's have a rose comb. The three birds you show have single combs, which is common to both plymouth rocks and marans.

#4 &#5 are either marans or rocks. Same comment about leg colour.

When the girls start laying, marans will have a significantly darker egg than rocks, so you may be able to tell from that. Someone who breeds to the standard may be able to give you a better qualification as to body style and other, similar traits that someone such as I who have only had hatchery rocks do not know well enough to pick out the fine points. I will say that neither of the boys combs is well formed--#4 has too few points; #5 some of the points are melded together.

Right you are! So, to briefly hijack, which genes limit the barring to the head, hackles, shoulders, saddle & sickles?

Pretty pattern!

to myself for missing it.

It doesn't seem completely limited to the hackle and saddle area...I see some slight barring in the chest and down of the legs...

I LIKE it though...it's like a sort of crele coloration that's not completely crele..
