What are Ancona like, are they winter hardy. I am looking for a really winter hardy white egg laying breed.
Not super hardy, the rose-combed ones are probably better.
But mine went through the winter without complications.
The roosters have more tendency towards frostbite. The hen’s combs usually get smaller during winter, which is nice.

So I’d recommend rose combed Anconas.

I live in Northern Minnesota and do not plan on heating my coop. All the research I have done says that it is not necessary if you have winter hardy breeds. And can actually be harmful by not letting them acclimate to the weather. I do know that combs can freeze and I do have a couple of Roosters with large combs, I have read that petroleum jelly rubbed on their combs and wattles can help protect them, and also making sure their is no moisture build up in the coop. What are your experience with your chickens and cold weather. This will be my first winter with my chickens. And I have wondered if I should get a infrared heater.
