Hi folks...need some name ideas to throw around for our six new peeps. The youngest are two black australops (about a week old), middle are two EE's (about four weeks), and the oldest are two barred rocks (about six weeks). Any ideas? Kids are anxious to name them but I'm drawing a blank and I really don't want to name them "Brownie" or "Blackie"...LOL

Have you thought of trying a foreign language or foreign names? The former can be descriptive and pretty at the same time, and the latter can be uncommon, but still be considered names. An example is my black frizzle chick whom I named Barathrum because he is black like an abyss or chasm. I also like to make up names if I can't think of the perfect one, and you and your kids might enjoy that.

Some of my girls are named after Coronation St characters (famous Brit soap for those of you who have never heard of it ...). Betty, Rita, Mavis Thelma , and Violet and my two Light Sussex are named Patsy and Edwina (Ab Fab - another great Brit programme). I also like flower names as well, you know like, Rose, Poppy,Daisy, Tansy, they just seem to suit chooks:)

My son is partial to Greek Mythology names. He Named our Barred Rock Addidas. Our cat Odysseus....., Pericles, Othello, Hellene, Athina, Thea etc
Or your favorite Novel? Or Author? Charlotte, Bronte, Jane, Emma, Elizabeth, Beth, Jo, Marme, Amy........

My daughter likes names of flowers, Gladdys, Rose, Petunia, Tiger lilly.

How about names of PASTA - Penne' uh...okay not so good ran out of names....

I call my roo RaZZmaTazz because he is SOOOO LOUD!!!! I call one of the chickens Dopey (She is actually Daphney but she acts Dopey)

You could go with the German Huhne (Phonetically: Whoooo Na) Pollo (Poy- Yo) spanish for chicken El Pollo Loco

or Viking Names Brunhilda, Freya, Valkyrie, Easter (Yes Easter was the Viking Goddess of fertility but the name was borrowed for the Holiday because she was dear to the vikings and the Romans could not get them to give it up - Every wonder where the original EASTER EGG idea came from????? Originally it had nothing to do with a burial place) Actually Easter might be a lovely name for a chicken if you want to encourage her to lay a lot of eggs! (Sorry I am a history BUFF!!!)

When I have pairs like you do, I like to name them after a "famous" pair. Think Ginger & MaryAnn, Lucy & Ethel, Oprah & Gayle, Wilma Flintsone & Betty Rubble, . . . . . you get the idea. Just start brainstorming (I'm waiting on a trio so I can have Marsha, Jan & Cindy, LOL! Or even 4 so I can have the Little Women, Beth, Jo, Amy, and Meg.)

We take our time naming critters. Because when we name something quick it always winds up adopting a different name down the road anyway. Once they each start having their own personality the name will come to you.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper, eggy, dumplings, crispy, spicy, drumstick- these are all names Zach came up with for his first chicken he's getting tomorrow.

In my flock I have 4 same-breed pairs: Lakenvelders Minerva & Millicent, Welsummers Laverne & Shirley, Cochins Melissa & Priscilla, and the Cayuga duckling pair are Thelma and Louie - one of 'em turned out to be a drake. My RIR chick is Rhoda, the Plymouth Rock - Barred is Betsy. The rest are listed in my signature.

As you can see, I am partial to people names.

Dog and cat names don't follow the same naming pattern, though.... Zorro, Dooley (dogs), and Licorice, Smudge, Patch and PD (cats). I think the chickens got people names because I've lived a long time and raised a multitude of cats and dogs, so my brain couldn't come up with any more clever non-people names. Everybody on BYC refers to their "girls" or "ladies" and I lurked here for a couple months before I actually got my chicks last October. Once I started with the Rhode Island Red that HAD to be Rhoda, the rest just all had to come out of the people name bucket.
