Naming My Hens

I name mine, my favourite, the RIR also knows her own name when called. I call "Millyyyy!" she'll race across the garden and down to the back door, all the rest are like "what?! why's she running?!" and by the time they realise what's happening she's already eaten all her special treats.

She's more reliable at coming when called than my dog is!!!!!!!

All of them come running at "chick chick chickEENNNN!" though lol

We renamed our rooster from 'wacko' to 'roaster' - because that's what he'll become next spring when he successfully reproduces his genetic material into some chicks.

The girls, not sure about whether or not we'll consume them. They're all named, although their names do change periodically (some 'girls' became 'boys' and vice versa) They're good layers at this point - and those that make great momma's get to stay on as well. The ditzy one (snowflake), well, not sure she's smart enough to make it through the winter!

I just got mine Thursday and was planning on naming them. I got 4 Dominiques and 1 RIR. Naming the RIR will be easy but the others look to much alike to know who is who. I like the banding idea and may result into doing that. Dont know if I am going to consume my girls when they retire. Probably wont.

My roosters have names because they are rather distinct. And I have one hen with a name because whe is a White Rock/Silver Sebright cross and again very distinctive. Other than that they are referred to by flock as I have 2 flocks.

I prefer to not name them. It seems as though livestock laws are tougher than pet laws where damage is concerned. e.g. a dog killing chickens that are livestock can be dealt with harsher than a dog killing a pet. That's just my perception though.
