Nankin Bantams

UPDATE!
DD did really well, yesterday. The heat was miserable, but the breezes were very cooperative, so it was a little more bearable than we expected ... but still an absolutely hot, muggy mess. There were lots of seriously stressed birds, but most held up well ... until the power went out in the barns, last night! Luckily, we were already home and cooling off, by then.
Our little Jersey Moose surprised us all by winning her American Pullet class! It was a big class, and she's only three months old, so we weren't expecting a whole lot. In fact, the only reason we took her was for solid confirmation on her breed. We do bantams, so we didn't trust our sleuthing skills on this not-so-little Kindergarten dropout!
The judge assured us that she was, indeed, a JG ... and was surprised to find out she was so young. We've been forewarned that she should more than double her size by the time she's two. Yay? It's a good thing she's such a sweetheart ...

The three Nankins did really well, too. Last year's BIS RC won his small class, but lost to his coop-mate - our only SC Nanny - for Top Bantam honors. DD's lone hen entry won second, which is better than we expected, because while she's nice, she's more of a breeder bird than true show quality.

All of the Nankins competed in the Clean-Legged Bantam classes, as there are not enough around to make up a true breed class, yet ... but there's hope! There was another Nankin there, this year! He was one of our own babies, passed along to another 4H youth, last year, as part of a breeding pair. Word is getting out that Nankins do well at the local show ... so we're doing our part to get these little birds "out there," and hopefully, OFF the Critically Endangered Priority List!
:clap:clap:clap

Congratulations! Don’t you love a good poultry show?
Absolutely, but if anyone had told me that a couple of years ago, I'd have laughed them off. We've always shown dairy cattle, yeas ago, it was Holsteins, now it's Guernseys. Dairy cattle prep involves a lot of muscle and hard, physical work, which is very different from poultry prep, so the chicken show was an alien concept to us ... but they're fun! There's more "sitting around and waiting" with chicken shows, but that's when you do your best socializing and tip-sharing, at least at 4H shows, it is. I love it!

Our grandchildren are also showing calves. I showed calves in the 1960’s; my son and my now daughter-in-law showed calves and now the grandkids are showing calves. As a family, we are showing Birchen Modern Game Bantams and Black Breasted Red Old English Game Bantams. I know actually what you mean about the differences. With the steers you’re putting all you’ve got to make the sale. With the chickens, we clean them up, put them in the show pens and relax with a tall glass of tea.

Morning!
I’ve been an occasional lurker on this thread and noticed it abruptly stopped at “22” last year. Not sure if there’s a continuation thread somewhere that picks up, so finally coming out of the shadows and posting.

I’m the woman from NJ he obtained his starter flock from. :)
I’ve enjoyed following his adventures with the birds.
I’m Still trying to disseminate the breed, gave a group of chicks to a 4-Her last year. I figured he and his mom would have the time to show them and get them “out there” as I don’t.

I agree with everything I’ve read here — the club purists are pretty unhelpful, etc. It’s pretty frustrating, they’ve got an endangered breed and don’t appear particularly interested in promoting it or assisting interested newbies.

I’m currently trying to find some “fresh blood” for my little flock, and of course none are responsive to inquiries. I’m concerned about some anomalies I’m seeing crop up — chicks hatching with missing toenails, and at least one of my yearling hens is laying a Lot of tiny “fairy” eggs.

Hoping to hear back.

I am also looking for Nankin Bantams but they are proving to be extremely difficult to find show quality birds.

Hi! Where are you located?
I finally added a few birds to my group in the last couple months. Fresh roos from 2 different breeders and a nice quad of hens.
I’m hoping to be producing next Spring. Letting everyone grow up over the winter.

I’m in NJ, but a couple years ago I shipped a box of birds to NM. It’s possible. Especially if the USPS gets their act back together by next Spring.
I hope they do too! I ordered a bunch of hatching eggs this last spring and it was a disaster, I had to file multiple claims but won each one and got my money back. [email protected] is my email. Communication might be easier that way
