Nankins

I Still have 12 more Nankin Cockerels then I bargained on! They are sweet little guys not aggressive towards me my hubby or kids, but they are starting to brawl in the bachelor pen and need homes with some girls. I Haven't been able to sell them because I don't want to sell them to the WRONG people. Being as they are on the ALBC Critical list I would like them to go to others interested in preserving and bringing back this beautiful breed. I need some advice on what qualities to look for in a young Roo. I have a few with deep red coloring and blue legs and others with a off colored leg not yellow but not white. If anyone is interested please let me know. I will keep them for as long as I can.

LMAO! Welcome to the club Grumpypants, I have 6 single comb hens, 2 rose comb hens, 6 rose comb roosters, and about 8 single comb rooster. I think the math is obvious, lol. There are no 4-H or FFA chicken showers in my area, I have asked, and not had much luck finding anyone in my area that works in that to see about donating the spares for younger kids doing showmanship. I'm at a bit of a loss right now since there isn't really enough meat to justify butchering. Even with their reputation as being excellent foragers I dont' want to just turn them loose to full time free range either.

Got a few pics of my children, lol

Sigh* My poor butt-less birds, they are in the coop now and for whatever reason they feather picking seems to have stopped. They weren't crowded in this pen, but they still apparently got on each others nerves. Now I just have to wait for the boys to grow their butts back.

White/Tan? I have seen pictures of birds that could fit that discription... I belive most of the experts would advise not using him for breeding, since that colring is a sign of very light genes and the coloration of Nankins overall is already on the "light" side of where we want them. However that is not to say that such a rooster can't be a perfectly charming and friendly pet. Or even a great ladies man in the regular flock. Just not the best specimen for the purpose of breeding show quality Nankins.

White/tan does not sound like a good color for a nankin. We all have a opinion on what buff or light chestnut is. There was a lot of discussion on this topic a couple years ago. The difference can be surprising. Cockerels usually hold their color better than pulllets. Some lines seem to fade more than others. What ever shade it is, it should be even. At the last dual show we attended the first judge thought my birds were too light, the second one thought they were too dark. That was two different judges a couple hours apart. lol I breed for the shade I think the standard calls for and hope my interpretation is the same as most of the judges. When the judging is over and you have the opportunity you should ask the judge what he thinks about the color in the Nankins he has seen. It usually makes for a very interesting conversation.
