I'm new to chickens too, but I see the same behavior with my 20 week olds (got them as chicks). They like to play outside in the morning and afternoon, but they'll hang out in the coop during the hot part of the day, and sometimes I'll see them all sleeping in a pile in the corner. They dart in there whenever they hear something unfamiliar or see a hawk overhead, too.
Not sure if you've done this, but with my chickens I was told to keep them locked inside the coop for the first week so that they know to go back there to roost and seek shelter. If you haven't done that maybe it would help with the issues going in/out?
Also, really great advice from new2chooks. The first time I saw that I freaked right out, really would have been nice to have some warning on that one. So consider yourself warned!
Welcome, and hope that you're enjoying your new chickens! Are you getting any eggs yet?
