Nasty Butt

Need some help with what is wrong with my Barred Rock. Why does she have a messy butt some of the time and then perfectly clean other times? Thanks

my hens went through that to till I cleaned them up and trimmed their feathers back some and now their bottoms stay pretty clean. If I notice them getting messy again I just trim again, also could be something their eating that might make for messy poop. What do you feed them and give them for treats. When I say trim I don't mean trimming down to skin but just enough to keep the poo from sticking or running down their feathers.

They get layers pellets and free range grass, plus a little scratch feed most days.
