EXACTLY Katy! Very well said.

This is a good point, however in our country it isn't required that you be an expert in order to vote or have an opinion. Helps to avoid the opression of the masses.

I don't think these kinds of issues should be voted on anyway.

I about spit my mountain dew out reading that "animals have the same feelings we do". No, they don't, lol. The sad thing is so many believe that? If you wanna outlaw something maybe we should start with Disney.

Well said to both you and Katy.

I am enjoying reading all the responses to this thread. How delightful and encouraging it is to see folks lay out their beliefs and opinions in a calm and rational manner without a lot of emotional seething, and oftentimes vile ranting. Bravo Zulu to y'all.

There have been some really good and profound points made by folks like A.T. Hagan and Katy and such. Our country has moved away from a rural and agricultural culture. I personally wouldn't raise my birds in conditions where they were crammed into such tight quarters. But "A.T" is correct, the practice is there because people demand it. The population wants eggs and by necessity those "factory farms" are providing what they want at the cost they want. Katy and others make a great point by saying that often those who wish to change a practice have no experience whatsoever with the subject of the practice. And Yotetrapper makes a great point about Disney. Few people realize just how powerful a force the movie "Bambi" truly was.

The question was asked, "don't we owe the fellow animals of this planet at least a tiny bit of compassion and care? Because a lot of those factory farmed animals sure don't get any compassion or consideration as their own beings whatsoever." I think that's a great question and when boiled down to its purest form, it gets right to the very heart and root of the matter. I certainly don't wish to sound calloused or cold-hearted by if I were to give an answer to that question, it would have to be "No."

IMHO and based on my understanding of Scripture, the animals were given to us for our use and we are to have dominion over them. We do not "owe" them anything. In fact, Proverbs indicates that wisdom moves us to properly care for our animals so that they may benefit us all the more. The bottom-line, purest, boiled down, root of the issue for me is that animals are here for us - and not vice versa. Somehow the idea that we owe something to animals or to this Earth has permeated the fabric of this Society and that idea is completely backward. The sole reason that we ought to care for our animals and this Earth is NOT to put them on an even playing field with humans but rather so that they can be of more use to us.

And lastly, let me just once again say that I am not advocating "cruelty" to animals. Senseless, uncalled for, torture or "abuse" (and I hesitate to use that word because it is so often misapplied) of an animal for the sake of getting some kind of perverted pleasure out of such treatment is nothing more than pure Evil and should not be tolerated. I believe the Bible speaks to that as well.

God Bless,

Eh... Animals tend to have the similar emotional responses to certain situations that humans have. You kick a dog it will either get angry and bite you or get scared and cower. You kick a person they will either get angry and kick back or get scared and run away. Animals also tend to enjoy similar climates, freedom of movement, and clean environments that humans enjoy. Why do you think they lick themselves, look for shelter during bad weather and try to sleep far from where they poop?
It's apples and oranges; They are both fruit but they taste different.

Should animals be treated like human beings? Hell No. Treating a dog like a human leads to an unruly terror beast. Canines have a specific social order they obey by instinct. Alpha dogs don't give time outs, they bite the other dogs nose or neck.
Animals shouldn't be treated like an inanimate objects. They are living beings, they do feel pain and they can suffer. I have to agree with Tailfeathers in that we should be kinder to animals within reason. There will never be an even playing field because that isn't the way the world is set up.

I totally agree with this. Animals do have feelings, and some of their feelings are similar to our feelings, such as anger, fear, happiness, and others. True, they do not have all the same feelings as we do, and they don't really think like we do, but they can feel pain just like us. They can feel stressed if cramped in limited space, such as how many people would. So no, they do not have the same exact feelings as we do, but they do react in similar ways and they do have some feelings similar to ours. Ours are just more complex and more varied.

The last thing I think we need in this country are more regulations and laws. Every new rule costs you a little freedom.
