Natures Cafe Layer Pellets

I have been raising ducks for over 20 years...

mine look healthier when they get 20% protein feed.

The 17% protein feed costs less, so at times that is what I feed them....but they clearly do better at 20%, both my drakes and ducks.

At slaughter none of mine look overly fat. But mine have a good sized pen so get exercise.
Yeah, meat Birds...Not BYC pets

To me, it's really a conscious matter. My avian vet told me that too much protein could result in being overweight and other problems down the road. Everyone can do whatever they want, but I'll stay on the safe side and listen to the counsel of my vet. And intelligent people don't just rely on one source like Storey's guide. They ask people, do extra research, and reach conclusions on their own.

Actually, intelligent people rely on experience... that was just an example, since books have been quoted as reliable sources... and Holderread has over 40 years of raising various waterfowl quite successfully...

The point I was making is that there is a safe range, not just a single number for all... each should make their own decisions for their own flock... 'there is no one true way'...

She is saying that you are feeding birds that are only going to get killed 20%. There is a difference between birds that we love and cherish and birds that are going to end up on your plate.

Alaskan absolutely does love and care for their ducks... judging someone's choice is absolutely uncalled for...

I suspect that in a way, we are saying the same thing. There is no one right way. SO everyone can decide on their own.

So anyways, @CarleeAnn , what is your decision after listening to all of these different opinions? What do you think would be best for your ducks? Oh ya, and on a side note, are these ducks of yours going to be eaten? Cause if so, that could effect your choice. I haven't gotten a signal that you would kill your ducks so I am assuming your ducks are more of pets than Sunday's dinner.

That is deeply insulting.

Just because I eat some of my birds, does not mean that I do not love all of them or care for them.

I have breeders that I keep for many years, and that are pets.

Just because some are raised to be eaten does not mean that I am heartless or do not care for them well.

And, because some are slaughtered, I KNOW exactly how healthy they are and EXACTLY how good my feeding choices have been.

I'm sorry you feel that way. I just feel very strongly about killing animals. Like I said, it's all a conscious matter and everyone can decide for themselves.
