I have to agree...pawning off your problem on someone else is not the answer, IMHO. Some behaviors just can't be changed, they can only be STOPPED--permanently. I guess, though, being a meat-eater may skew my viewpoint of the situation. I can understand others' way of looking at it, but I don't agree with it. Again, just MHO.

I tried to give him away on BYC--CL-neighbors- crap to the raccoons but noooo he lived to flog me daily-I picked him I cat tell you how many times and held for a long time while cleaning-I sprayed with hoses-rakes-shovels-cold baths even nothing worked with this one-He had "to go" as my girls were looking beat up too and I missed their pristeen feathers-they all paid homage to me that day and all laid an egg! it was quiet in the land of makebelieve and still has been since the roos I have now are good boys-so far!

I have no regrets as of now. I have a mean RIR roo and he leaves tomorrow. YEA!!! I finally put the fear in him after he started attacking me but he now he attacks my little dog who has cancer and is not going to be with us much longer. I decided enough I'm tired of the dogs being afraid to go outside to use the bathroom and they started to use the bathroom in the house which they never did before. So it was new home or I would have to cull him myself. So I vote get rid of him not worth the peace in the family and the worry. Wish you the best

HA, I would almost find that funny too....if it didn't end with a death. I killed once out of anger too (not a chicken), and it was terrible. I felt....less...less, human....I suppose...I'll never do that again. Like my very soul was damaged from that act of senseless violence.....melodramatic, I know, just tellin the truth....
I never kill any roosters.....or anything, for that matter....call me what you want for that: I've seen it happen plenty of times, but now, it would be just giving up for me.....I at least try to sell them if they're unwanted...

If you dont mind me asking what animal was it? Sorry I feel nosey.
P.S I love your avatar!

Hey again Yazzo, and thanks for your long response. I really appreciate the time you've taken here!

Okay, tameness: When I let my chickens out of their run in the morning, they all come scooting after me cause they know I'm going to throw down some corn for them. They follow me around grumbling at me till I do it. All the hens will come up to within a foot or so of me. My original seven (ISA Browns and Black Rocks) will peck food from my hand. The two Marans hens I hatched out along with the big bad roo are more wary and faster to get out of my way if I go near them, but they're still fairly relaxed about coming up near me to peck food. My three Leghorns and three other adult Marans I've only had for a few weeks. They're still getting used to me so I'm not really scoring them for tameness yet. My two baby Marsh Daisy roos that are about 16-18 weeks old, well, they're hilarious. They want to hang about indoors with me. They come inside and roost on the edge of the dogs' basket. They run and hide under my bed. Gah! As for picking any of them up, well, they're not mad keen on it but if I corner them in their pen and make a swift grab, they calm down in a few seconds and are almost content to be held and petted. That's good enough for me as I don't really want to be cuddling them all the time. I just want to be able to check them for lice and mites every so often without too much fuss.

So I have 16 hens with one adult roo. I think that's a fairly good ratio, yes? I handled the adult roo every day until about 8 weeks old and then I kinda stopped so maybe that is part of the problem now. Annoyingly, I hatched out two roos in that bunch, and the other one (also a Cuckoo Marans) was much friendlier, much calmer, and also had the correct colouring. I was intending to breed from him in time and when the two roos started fighting (actually when the pesky one I've got now started beating on the nicer one and chasing him off every day) I planned to give away the bad roo and keep the sweet roo, but before I found Mr Angry a new home, the sweet roo turned up dead one day. Still don't know what happened to him as I plucked him bald (for practice as well as a post mortem!) and there wasn't a mark on him that I could see. Very odd... Anyway I'm being loads more attentive with my baby roos this time round and picking them up as much as I can, so hopefully they'll stay polite.

As for Scotland, yes, it's every bit as beautiful as it's reputation. It's wild and rugged yet small enough that most places are within a day's drive. I'm a half hour from the coast and I go fishing in the Firth of Clyde and sailing round the islands. I'm just an hour from some of the best hill climbs and mountain scenery in Europe. I live in the countryside on a quiet farm yet I'm just fifteen minutes drive from the bustle of Glasgow city centre. The weather today is beautiful, warm and sunny and I'm looking out the door at my chickens pecking around in the field with my cows. I'm just about to take my dogs for a ramble in the countryside. I know full well how fortunate I am and I appreciate it every single day. And if you ever get over to visit, come look me up and I'll give you a roo to take home as a souvenir. LOL!

I only read thru page 4 but it was like reliving a nightmare. When I first started out with chickens we had a cuckoo marans, I called him a coo coo moron.... He did the same thing to me as yours did to you, he would stalk me hiding behind trees and bushes waiting for his perfect opportunity to attack me from behind. Sneaky lil stinker he was. Because my DH loved "Earl" He got to stay here for ... awhile. Earl only got more vicious and drew blood on me several times. I played football with him in the back yard and he STILL came back for more. Everytime I went outside I'd have to carry a baseball bat, pitch fork, or a big shovel to keep him away from me. I gave him away free! A few months later I saw on the news the man who picked him up had been busted for fighting them. Earl didn't win.... I woulda been better off eating him because even tho he was a vicious psychopath he didn't deserve to go out like that

No problem, just glad I could help....

Well, I'm really glad to hear that they are at least tame ENOUGH. To be perfectly honest, I'm not picking up my chickens all the time and cuddling them or anything....but they're tame enough that I can easily.
Yeah, 16 hens and one roo is a very good ratio!

Hmm....it's too bad about your good rooster....I just had two Lakenvelder roosters, then the 'good' one just disappeared without a trace.

Wish you the best of luck with your chickens, and taming your roos, and hope you get much entertainment out of them!

Update on MY mean rooster that will hit the chop block in the morning. DH had gone to camp for acouple days after incident with said rooster, came home this morning with his shin hurting and infected where the rooster flogged him. Yes we had washed it out and applied meds when this happened. Dr. appt. 2 shots in the hips for infection and on oral antibotics! Never will I keep a mean rooster around again because he is handsome or protective of the hens. So think twice before you pawn a mean handsome devil on someone else.
