NE Oklahoma Chicken Stock - Let's Plan!

I looked at the table map and if the red ones are the ones that are spoken for, I'll take #51...is that ok?

That is fine. I will put your name on the reserved list for space #51. I'll update the map as soon as I get everything typed in and saved.

Edited after posting new map: Fairwindminishetland you have space #51. An updated map is available on page one.

Hi, any more updates?

No updates today, unless you count the phone call I got from my brother in California. He wanted to know if I needed any restraining cones to go with the plucker he's making. I'm hoping to have a plucker and cones to put on display, and if there's time and interest, we may be able to do a quick demo with the plucker. We'd have to make sure parents understand the nature of the demonstration so that nobody gets upset. Maybe we've got a magician or clown in the BYC who could do a show at the other end of the barn at the same time. I could bring a couple of birds on ice in a cooler, pop them into the plucker, and then explain and show two different ways to process the birds after they are plucked. Do you think there would be any interest?

We will wait until we get a little closer to event day. If there is enough interests then, we'll put a processing demo on the schedule. I need to be sure we have something for the little folks to do at the same time. I don't want to upset anyone.

Al, Roy, Erlene and I did the processing demo at POOPS last year with no restrictions. Our most enthusiastic audience attendees were the kids. One little girl about 5 stood on a bench right next to the processing area to get a better view. And we did the whole deal, including the killing. I wouldn't worry about the kids, and if parents are concerned they can just take their kidos away from the area.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Personally, I think kids need to know where food really comes from. It is the grownup chickens-as-pets adults I worried about, but they knew to stay away from that area.

Best of luck.

How about having a petting zoo in one of my areas? We can do bunnies baby goats, chickens, ducks etc. I can come up with a miniature cow as well probably.

Buster - I arrived too late at the last POOPS to see the processing demo. Thanks for your input. Now that I know how it went, I need to reassess what's possible. I process all the birds we eat here at home, and because my husband is not in a position to help (psychological barriers due to tenderheartedness), I made an assumption about who might not be able to emotionally process such a demonstration. This requires more thought.

Allbreeds - I think a petting zoo is a great idea, but it's not allowed under the rental contract. Our rental of the barn is only for poultry and waterfowl. Pigeons, turkeys, and caged birds are okay, but bunnies, goats, and cows are four-legged animals, so we can't host them in the barn during our poultry event. I know the kids would love it, but we'd have to be on private property with different insurance considerations. I'm putting your suggestion into a file so that if we every have a location where this could be included, I'll know who to call. The petting area at the Tulsa Zoo is the first place my grandkids want to visit when we're at the zoo.
