neapolitan mastiff

I love the pictures of your gorgeous puppies.

I have only met one in person, but I did have a girlfriend that had a Neo. She had to put him down a just 5 years old. He blew his knees out, because of how heavy he was. I have a Komondor that just turned 12 so I know that the big breeds should have a longer life span than my GF dog had.

Our neo passed Nov 28th 2010. They are amazing gentle giants, aka see couch potato not running partner. If you have specific questions about my experience feel free to email me or message me. RIP Mercury, you are deeply missed.

Ok could not resist posting a pic of my Boerboel (African Mastiff ) also an excellent people guardian aka personal body guard of all children on the property. One of a current pac of five.

Our Spartacus is a friendly fellow too. He has never had a bad experience with man or beast. And we plan to keep it that way if we can.

I do have a funny story about the Mastiff protective instinct.

Spartacus has never shown any aggressiveness to anyone. And we too wondered if push came to shove if he would protect us. We found out on a camping trip.

The Park Ranger came to clean out the fire pit. He had a rake and a shovel in his hands. We had Spartacus on a tether contraction my husband designed with a pulley and a retractable lead, so Sparks can have freedom of movement around the campsite, yet still be on a "leash" at all times as required.

Well, this fellow came walking up with the rake and shovel, and Sparks wouldn't let him in the campsite. Didn't bite him, just stood there and barked and let the guy know he was not going any closer with his "Weapons".

Spartacus wouldn't let ANYONE, even people he knew since he was a puppy in the camp with anything he considered a weapon. (We were on a congregational campout for the weekend so there were 20 or 30 people to keep an eye on.) For instance, No one could bring in sticks for the wood pile, without first putting down the "weapons" and being "checked out" by "security". If my husband or I said it was "ok" then they were allowed to come in camp, but he watched them until the "weapons" were no longer a threat.

One night we were sitting around the fire, one of the guys had a retractable fork, used for cooking hot dogs or marshmallows over an open fire, he opened the fork and there , all of a sudden, right at beside him at eye level, was Spartacus. Spartacus "chuffed" at the fellow, as if to say "Hey, put that weapon away!"

They are good protectors of people. And it is amazing how they think for themselves and deal with people they think are a threat. I find them to be very kind and thoughtful. Our Spartacus is always thinking.

All the pics make me so want to try Neos again.

In the 80's there weren't many in the country. I was having two imported and they were on the plane on their way to Oakland. It was the same day as the '89 earthquake. My house was severly damaged and red tagged. Car was in the garage and pipes went through the windshield and no power of phones for days. The breed couldn't reach me, so send the dogs to someone else who had been waiting for one in Riverside I believe. Spent the next year having problems with insurrance and FEMA (I cringe when they show up anywhere now) and by the time things were less hectic I decided to stay with my Rotties and Akitas. Never got my Neos, but I did train and handle for a couple who had 3. I think I got too old to deal with the slobber. LOL

What's really cool abou tthis thread though is to see other Corsi owners!
