I don't raise meat birds but used to buy them from a rancher. They were not Cornish X. they were mixed free range birds.

Just how Americans and Poultry farmers like them: fat, dumb, lazy, and cheap with lots of meat and fat so it tastes good. Nutrition doesn't matter, quality of life doesn't matter, just price and flavor! That's where the Cornish X came into light. Nothing really compares to it. If you want a chicken with some personality and character who will act like a chicken and not just sit in front of the feeder, look at almost any other breed....they are lazy and kind of stupid...

There are a ton of forums on here talking about heritage meat birds, but honestly most layer breeds were once raised for meat and still can be. You're not going to get the meat you see at the grocery store because those are all Cornish X. I'd start your search for a better meat bird with dark Cornish, but again any bird will give you meat, just not the meat of a Cornish X.
