The coop as I left it today. My mom found my grandpa's weathervane in their garage. A coat of fresh paint and it was mounted today!

Met another local chicken addict today! Welcome Becca! She's hatching some eggs from my hen house this month and I'm hatching some more for another woman up the road!

Had plenty of snow up here, almost 5 inches and half an inch of ich under it first. It poured sleet before it started snowing. We STILL have some on the ground!

Hope everyone is doing well with our mini cold snap :)

I don't raise meat birds but used to buy them from a rancher. They were not Cornish X. they were mixed free range birds.
Why aren't you impressed.?

They are probably perfect cage birds, they ate lazy and kind of stupid. They are also ugly, do not grow all of their feathers. I want something more willing to range.

...they are lazy and kind of stupid...
Just how Americans and Poultry farmers like them: fat, dumb, lazy, and cheap with lots of meat and fat so it tastes good. Nutrition doesn't matter, quality of life doesn't matter, just price and flavor! That's where the Cornish X came into light. Nothing really compares to it. If you want a chicken with some personality and character who will act like a chicken and not just sit in front of the feeder, look at almost any other breed.

There are a ton of forums on here talking about heritage meat birds, but honestly most layer breeds were once raised for meat and still can be. You're not going to get the meat you see at the grocery store because those are all Cornish X. I'd start your search for a better meat bird with dark Cornish, but again any bird will give you meat, just not the meat of a Cornish X.

Yes I have subscribed to most of the meat forums and have been lurking for awhile. I just wondered what local people were using.
