Nebraskans Speak Up!!! NEBRASKA ROCKS!!

Hello neighbor! I am about 30 miles south of you on hwy 14. As long as you have a heated brooder you can get them anytime. As soon as they feather out they do not need heat, mine have went all winter without heat.
But they need a heater brooder until then. I think Orchelens starts selling chicks in April. I generally keep them in the brooder for a couple weeks, then start letting them out.

Not far from me at all. I work in Clay center. I was hoping not to keep them in the house too long. Between the 2 cats and all the kids I have enough activity around the house. Can't wait to get outside and get things ready. But I still have plenty of snow in my yard and everything else is a mud hole. Going to have to wait awhile.

Yes I am eager to start too. Plan on the being in your house, or garage with a heat lamp, for a few weeks no matter what. But they grow fast. I start them in my border in a tiny cage under the lamp. Then quickly I let them out of the cage during the day but still with access to the lamp. then I'll take the lamp away. Then they begin spending days outside. soon they are out full time.

I am supposed to ask you if you know the Huenefelds. They live pretty close to you. We are old friends.

I don't know them. I'm originally from davenport then lived close to Edgar for about 10 years. My kids go to sandy creek to school so between work and school I really haven't met any of my neighbors. I'll going to have to figure out where these chicks will go after I kick them out of the house. Might have to find a way to get some heat in the coop so I can put them out there and they can have a little freedom when they get big enough.

Very close to Edgar. Yes because my barn does not currently have electricity (on the 5 year plan) I run an extension cord (those heave duty outdoor type)To my brood house.

Hi, wanted to drop in and introduce myself. DH and I are seriously looking into moving from Ks to Ne. Is there anyone from the North Platte or Grand Island areas?
Here in Ks I have a diverse bunch of animals tho I don't know yet if I'll be able to move all of them or not.

Yes, especially west of North Platte if we can find a bit of land or a place to rent. We have family in both areas tho so we'll see. Personally I like the climate and higher altitude west of North Platte. I'm praying we'll find some pasture that we can buy and put a place down or a homestead away from all the big Ag farm ground. We're coming to Ne over the weekend to do some looking for a place. My health is a large reason we're moving and if we can find what we're looking for it'd be a new lease on life for me. Im praying hard!

You cannot really get away from big ag, you just do your best to shield yourself from it and stay down wind of it. Western NE is beautiful, good luck!

I think you mean up wind but I agree. I think we can do better than 50' out my back door and only a bit farther on the other 3 sides. Lol it's bad here. Thanks!!!
What all kinds of birds do you all have? Is anyone joining the Easter Hatch a Long? I'm planning to at least set some of my mixed breed eggs and I'm hoping to get some purebred ones to set too. :)
