Necropsies

Unfortunately, without those last threads about the hatchery that cannot be named, I would be ignorant to what has happened and may happen to my chicks. So I do want to Thank everyeone who came forward with ideas, suggestions and advice on what has been going on. I will adjust a few things once my order gets here.

No one has said anything about a hatchery that cannot be named. We have repeatedly stressed that there cannot be pointing of blame without proper testing and diagnosis. BYC will not be held accountable for members who flame and slander businesses, groups or individuals for any reason or in any thread.

To continue with the backhanded comments will cause this thread to be closed.

In all fairness, Miss Priss, do you not think your last post on that very thread could be construed as flaming ("verbally attacking people or groups of people") and trolling ("posting to provoke others, luring them to flame or rant")? Sure felt that way to those of us on the other side let me tell you. We just want some answers and a sense of not being alone in these experiences. I have ordered from MM for years, my parents did before me. I currently have an order of ducks and turkeys placed with them that I have NOT cancelled, and I have NOT asked for a refund on my dead chicks (10 out of 31) because I am NOT a newbie, as keeps being implied, and I am aware of early mortality in chicks. But now I have older chicks showing leg signs and would like to know what others responses from the medical community are so that it may aid in my decision as to what to do with my remaining chicks.

The only way you can have a proper diagnosis for the problems with your chickens is to have your own testing done. Climbing on the band wagon here is do nothing but inciting more problems and raising the feathers of others.

If you have a problem with my moderation you should contact me privately or bring it before Nifty-Chicken, the owner of this website, who also has the final say in how we moderate and what our duties are.

I so hope that you don't close this thread. I am one of, I am sure, many that cannot afford at the moment to take any of the sick babies in to have the necropsies done.

I too have problems here. One recovering but so weak (at least I hope it is only just weakness), and 6-8 more showing the beginnings of it all.

I understand the "realities" involved in chicken rearing....that you lose some, but was also told that this could be greatly minimized by careful sanitation and staying ahead of many potential problems.

I am NOT upset with the hatchery, I am just sad.

To sum things up though, please don't ban threads that would give us information on the necropsies. I am SO tremendously grateful to all of you that have gone out of your way and CARED enough to do them. My thanks. You are potentially helping SO many of us.

Hi neighbor - I was going to call you this morning on the way in but didn't get a chance.

I do indeed want you to take my mille fleur as well. I changed my mind last night after watching the poor thing. She is starting with the head shaking/neck straining now as well. I'll hang onto the polish as he still seems to be doing okay.

regarding the "leg issues", as an experienced 4-H chick-raising family, we thought we were seeing leg issues too..... I'm worried you've got what our chicks have. I don't know if we can (or will be able to) save any of our chicks from this awful plague, but considering it a leg issue for a couple of days may have cost us some valuable treatment time. Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this soon. I haven't found any local resources willing to help yet, but our 4-H kids are not going to have anything left to show by Fair....sigh...

Miss Prissy-I do not have a problem with you as a moderator, this isn't personal. I was just trying to show the other side of the issue. And while I respect your advice, I do not find it cost or time (3 1/2 hr drive) effective. While you may disagree, I feel it has been shown here that many of us are going through the exact same thing. And I feel I can make an informed decision based on other people's medical responses. I agree with appleton78, I really hope you do not close this thread and allow those of us who did not get a necropsy to benefit from the ones who did. (Whom we are eternally grateful to BTW! Thanks so much guys!!)

jmromani-I am so sorry!! How heartbreaking it must be for you and your kids to be dealing with this!! We did have luck with one chick by hobbling him with a bandaid (I'll send you the link to the site I learned how to do this from if you'd like.)It doesn't appear to be working for the other two though at this point. (It helps them to walk while it's on, but the legs go out again as soon as removed)

This thread will not be closed as long as it is a healthy discussion and there isn't post after post of finger point and flaming.

I want everyone to find out what the cause of the illness in their chicks is due to.

It would also serve all of your best interests to seek out your state vet and see if there is any provision at a local lab or state tech or university that provides a free necropsy when needed. Some states do this. I believe there is someone at U Penn that is a poultry specialist can can do necropsies and I don't think the research center charges and if they do it is in the neighborhood of $5 or so. I know here in Va that Va Tech does the same in some cases. Don't waste time here rehashing when you can get on the phone or send email and get some real world hands on help that won't cost you an expensive vet bill.

Help is out there if you will look for it and search it out. Rehashing does not get you the help you need.

I can understand feeling that your hands are financially tied but unless you have medical proof you cannot give an informed diagnosis. Specualtion is unacceptable in the world of science and disease.

As someone who can rightly claim to be a scientist, speculation is the fuel that leads to finding answers in science. Attempting to stamp out speculation in the scientific process is to bury one's head in the sand. For instance, someone speculated that the as yet to be identified illness killing my chicks might be related to a deficiency of a certain vitamin caused by an improper inoculation at the Iowa Hatchery. I then procured a vitamin supplement and introduced it to the sick chicks attempting to help them. So far the result has failed. But it could have led to recovery for the sick chicks. If it did, I'd be able to postulate that the addition of the vitamin supplement might be key in helping my chicks. More research would be needed. But without the speculation, I may never had tried the vitamin supplement. So, if anyone wants to provide more speculation to me on this issue, I'm all ears.
