Necropsy Pictures - Another Case of a Cystic Oviduct?

The cancer might not have been related to Mareks disease, but you really need to get some testing done next time you see any respiratory disease symptoms, or a necropsy if you lose a chicken. Infectious bronchitis usually causes sneezing and a little congestion. MG may cause bubbles in an eye, and can look similar to IB, but IB will not cause the bubbles in the eye or swelling in the face. Call your state vet and ask how to get some inexpensive testing for next time. They can also tell you the minimum price for a necropsy on a backyard chicken. I was surprised to find it was only $23 here in Ohio if I delivered the body to the state vet.

Funny enough Sicilia, which was the first to have clear Marek's symptoms, I know was vaccinated and died first. She, however, was the only one to get wet avian pox (before I even knew what that was - I was researching her symptoms when I found BYC) and we nursed her thru that. She stopped laying for weeks and came back into lay (we were so thrilled!) and then a few weeks after that she developed the Marek's symptoms and died in about a week. Her progression was completely different from the other hens, which is why I didn't think until now it was what killed the other hens.

I don't know about the other hens being vaccinated - maybe Ginger (New Hampshire) and Daisy (buff orp) were vaccinated. I got those 2 together. I'm pretty sure the 4 leghorns, 2 sapphire gems and 3 black australorps, 1 lavender orp were not. I really have not even a guess for the 5 older hens I bought together (of which 3 have died - Buffy (EE) and Crystal (white rode island) are left). And Cinders (EE) - I can't even remember where I got her - LOL!

I did download the form to send a hen to the state vet. That's as far as I got - it was a little complicated for me to follow what to do. I also don't know what I'd do with the info they give me. So they confirm Marek's - it doesn't change anything. It won't tell me what to do to deal with it. I guess I'm not seeing the value in the exercise.

Thanks for outlining the differences between MG and IB. It rings a bell now. Based on this it's probably MG and I remember reading about it and feeling pretty confident it fit the symptoms I saw. I only thought IB due to the fluid sac found upon necropsy in Petunia and Lily.

Ok I cross posted. I'll look into testing further if one dies. I did go to the local vet a month or so ago and it was $100 for the visit and sending work to a lab.
Don't deal with the vet for a necropsy. Call the state lab tomorrow.
The state lab will answer your questions about how to send in a bird.

I wasn't at all impressed with the vet's office and don't want to go back there or use them for anything. I can't promise to call the state vet tomorrow - I'm on vacation and a few chicken worry free days will be nice! - but it's on my to do list. I do think I'll call as the best idea. The lab seems to be in Orlando - about 3 hours each way. Not sure I'm willing to drive that but I did read your post on asking for the FedEx code. I'll see what they say/suggest.
