Need 4H project help.

4-H is a piece of cake during the fair week as long as you know how to take care of you birds your fine show day you should have a judging table with cages and someone will announce the classes and your leader(s) will help you figure out what classes you are in and then you put them in the cage and listen carefully to the judges pros and cons of your bird......showmanship is a bit harder be sure you know about the breed you are using for showmanship and a little history, also basic care and some basic poultry history and terminology!!! i ended up with champion in my class and 3 first and a boat load of seconds its not hard and your 4H leader should and will help you alot mine did

I hate to sound cheep but we don't have much money to buy a trio of show quality birds if there is a other way.

It has been a long time since I was in 4H but nobody helped me with any of my projects. I didn't take an animal so I didn't get any help. Actually the only kids that got help & attention was the ones doing the lambs & calves. Rabbits weren't even considered a real project by my group.

4H was not a long lived thing for me. The only thing that keep me going back was the ribbons I got at the fair, the people walking by & pointing out what I built & saying how it would look in there house, & the money I made after the show was over. I will have to admit that my mom bought everything I built but others try to buy it also but mom always offered me twice as much as the other person wanting it.

I want to try to support my son in this thing as much as my mom did me but let him do the work.

My daughter only showed the one chicken, actually all the kids only had one chicken at the fair. Best of luck!

my 12 year old son shows barred rock bantams.....he does really well with them at shows and we have some young ones growing out. He is selling all the young ones and getting back down to his original trio so we can focus on bantam wyandottes...... we could pick you out a young pair about 5 months old for $30 that will do very well in shows and produce some nice chicks....shipping would be $50. Here is a picture of his roo....aka the daddy chicken to the young ones...you can kind of see the hens in the back ground

my mom supports me in everything i do in 4H but no work for her!!! but 4H is sooo rewarding i just love it ive done like everything under the sun.....but just remember while in the ring or by the judging table dont get nervous and feed high protein for production breeds that is the wisedom i inpart to this thread!!!

I second the person who suggested do some research on 4-H clubs in your area and see if any of them have a current Poultry Project. If so, sign up to join and the Poultry Project Leader will teach you guys all you need to know. If your son is younger or on the small side, it may be easier if he works with a Bantam at least for the first go around. They are just easier to handle for the younger kids.

A lot of people get discouraged when they find out that there is not a current active Poultry Project in their area. If there isn't, try and find a local 4-H club, and approach them about starting a Poultry Project. It is not difficult to become the project leader and your local extension office can assit you with project material to learn from and teach from.

you want to see some pretty chickens....I need to take some pictures of his partridge wyandotte bantams. He has a trio and we cant seem to beat the hen to the eggs.....darn egg eater. We have tried everything. We only hatched 4 this year.

Bantam chickens and ducks are awesome for kids to show....they are smaller and easier to handle. Good luck picking just one variety......hehehe
pretty soon your chicken pens will double and triple.

she aint kidding i started with a pair of ducks and now i have over 40 chickens and ducks!!! its a adiction there should be like a AA for chicken lovers!!!!!​
