Need A Dog Expert ..** UPDATE **

Well I'm not sure exactly whats going on with her but I do know that when my grandmas dog was in heat she put a premature baby diaper on her. It may sound funny but if you didn't want to keep her in the bathroom then you could get a diaper for her.

I've got a friend here at work that the same thing happened to. She was a young terrier of some sort, and all of a sudden, she began urinating in her bed at night. They had THOUSANDS of dollars worth of testing done, and never did find out the reason. She was put on a medication that resolved it (it took a few months), my friend doesn't remember what the med was, but she's going to check and see if she still have the bottle tonight, and if so, I'll add it to this thread tomorrow. Good luck, the poor baby - she's been through a lot!

I am by no way a dog expert. Have you thought about gallbladder and liver stones? The gallbladder and liver can become impacted with stones and cause many health issues. Most medical doctors will tell you the only way to remove them is to have surgery, which is false. There is a simple remedy to remove stones and cleanse the gallbladder and liver naturally. I would also consider a parasite cleans or maybe feeding some DE with her feed. It sounds like she has suffered a great deal because of some very cruel people, but I believe you say the vet has not found anything wrong with her yet. To obtain optimal health it is critical to keep our digestive system in order. Anyway good luck with your dog and I hope everything works out for her it has been very unfortunate event for you and her.

As far as Dixie getting better - she will never fully heal - she will never be able to use that front leg and her hips healed in away that her hips will always be a problem for her, and she does have arthritis in her hips.

I will ask her vet about some of the meds- mentioned to see if they will help my crippled ole girl LOL

I am thinking that she may just have a weak bladder, so I will start getting her some puppy pads to put where she likes to lay to help with clean up any accidents.

thanks for the advice I am sure something will help just wait to see what her vet says.

Julie

Since she is stressing her other joints have you thought about putting her on a joint supplement? If not Dasuquin is a good one.

Hi, such a sad story, she's such a sweety.
I have a client with a burmese cat who was hit by a car and has the same problem but with his Number 2s not wees! he has incontinence purely from the damage to his hips, they just use these wonderful wipes that get rid of pet odour.
I also have a lient with 2 elderly labradors who are 14. No sign of athritis and they say its due to their diet which is: good quality dry food, and i tin of sardines mixed in daily.
They love it and I reckon it is great for the athritis.
May be worth a try for you.
I hope things improve for you, if things get bad you may need to change to floor tiles which are easiest to keep clean.
Good luck
Helen

As for as the incontinence issue at night- try restricting fluids at night. Give her an opportunity to drink after dinner for one hour then no more fluids. It worked for me with an aged dog that became incontinent at night.
You might also want to try a raw diet, dogs need less fluids because of the reduced sodium in the food.
Good luck.

Well after talking to Dixie's vet, ( she has an appointment in a few days ) we are going to try a mild pain reliver for her hips which means buying more hotdogs !! ( she hates taking meds ). We are also going to look into getting her on meds to help add strenght back into the walls of her bladder - but because of the damage she had it might not work, if her bladder were able to age with her the out come would be better, but since the trama was man made and aged her joints and bladder when she was only 1 1/2 years old - there might not be much that can help her.
Putting her to sleep thank-god is not needed since she is as healthy as she can be - and she is still very active and believe it or not she still loves people I would have thought since people hurt her she would shy away, but she still greets everyone with a smile and a wagging tail.
We have taken water away from her at bedtime, put her outside to potty just before bed, made her a bed in the bathroom ( only place that has tile where she will be warm also for winter ).She did have an accicent last night but it was not alot- and no big deal to clean just threw her blankets in wash and mopped floor.
Thank you all for the advice it helped me and her vet come up with different things we might be able to try I know Dixie does not like going potty in her sleep because when she does she always " acts like she is in trouble" we NEVER get mad at her - she cant help it.
After vet visit I will keep you posted on what we are trying.

Thanks again everyone

Julie

OK " DOPOP" - she has many nicknames.. DODO HEAD, POPPY,DOPOP yea I know poor dog with names like that !

Anyway - we had a vet visit yesterday and she is now taking half a baby aspirin for aches and pains - she takes it once a day. She also had an x-ray of her hips and vet saw alot of areas where artrist (sp) will be a problem in the next few years .
As far as her bladder he does not really think there is much we can do for her as far as making it stronger since it is not weak from old age, but rather weak from human damage but he will get back to me in a few days about it, for now on nights where it is nice she can sleep outside where we have built a huge dog house for her and her buddies- but on cold nights she will have to sleep in the bathroom where there is tile floor and I also got her some of those puppy pads used in house training young pups to help soak up anything in case of accicedent.
He also said her leg is " shrinking" nicely and there is not much mussel or nerves left so taking the leg off can be done at anytime - we plan on doing sometime this summer. She will be happier without having this dead limb hanging there.

But Dixie thanks you all for the wonderful advice you
all gave.Wish her luck with the up coming operation.
It will be one more thing this poor dog will have to go through just because a group of people were heartless.

Thank you very much
Julie

I know the post was written about 2 weeks ago, but I can sympathize and had to post. One of my dogs was born with a birth defect (ectopic ureter), which ended up causing her to have a weak sphincter muscle of the urethra as a side effect. I know your dog doesn't have a birth defect, but the pottying can be from the same issue (incontinence). Casey, our dog, would "leak" at night and we were told that nothing would help. I insisted on trying incontinence drugs since worst case it doesn't work. She is a 65 lb dog and takes PPA 75 mg, twice a day. (Also, cream cheese works great for us...it is cheaper than hot dogs too!). The PPA has worked GREAT! She doesn't leak much at all now! The incontinence was just a side effect of her defect. Her injuries may have caused damage to her muscles...even if only short term. It doesn't hurt to try it. Also, Casey is good about staying on her bed at night, so we got a couple waterproof pads (like they use in baby cribs and nursing homes) and put them over her bed. She doesn't think she is being punished for her leaking (as lame as it sounds, Casey is self conscious about her leaking because she thinks she pottied in the house) and we just switch them out when we toss one in the wash. Saves her bed too!
