need a Rooster

Ok I have 6 EE hens they are just started to lay. I want to get a Roo for them my question is are EE good for eating? or should I get another breed for the Roo to get a better meat bird.I can order a EE roo but I have to get about 9 chicks and if the are all boys I want to process the ones I don't want. Same if I order hatching eggs any suggestions?

If you want the offspring for meat as well as eggs I would go with something other than an EE roosters as EEs tend to be on the scrawny side. I would suggest either an Orpington or a Brahma rooster. Both of these breeds have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle, they are both good laying breeds, and both of them will add some size to the offspring for eating purposes.

I second the brahma or orp! Have you checked your local craigslist? Alot of people get rid of roos for free or cheap,that way you won't have to obligate yourself to others you really don't want. Maybe post and ad "wanted" or "looking for". Good luck!

I would not order a male chick unless I were looking for a specific breed that was difficult to find. Even then, I've had good luck with wanted ads on CL, finding pure Ameraucana or Marans, etc locally. I'd say post a wanted ad and see what's available.

My only concern about the Brahma is they take forever to reach maturity. You might want something a little faster growing like a Rock or a Wyandotte.

X 2 - I would also look for a bird that was 1+ in age as you get one that has moved beyond the "teen" stage and has settled into his grown up personality so you know what you're going to have vs. waiting to see what he grows up to be.

Thanks guys I can't do any thing right now because of the weather . We have TSS and rural king here that sell in the spring but are these birds well breed. I will check GL. or does any body on the forum have any I live in SWKY. near FT Campbell army base. When I get a rooster how will the girls react.
