I agree that every business SHOULD be in business to make money. I think charging a higher price for a higher quality product, regardless of whether it's a chicken or a cupcake, is also a good thing.

But I think charging $400 for a pair of birds that are not THAT very' exotic is highway robbery. They could charge half as much for the same birds and STILL make a ginormous profit, which is the point of being in business, is it not?

Price gouging is price gouging & you can package it up in pretty ribbons however you like. Just because they have an attractive website and healthy birds (which pretty much ANY reputable non-price-gouging breeder will offer) doesn't mean they're worth the prices they charge.

But I also believe in everyone's right to spend their money however they choose. If you got money to toss and want to buy from them, you have that right. I am simply saying I choose not to do businesses with such companies that are so blatant and obvious in their gouging... that's my choice. I simply said what I personally would or would not do, and even if I won the lottery tonight, I wouldn't buy from them.

Or you could wait another 6 months and get whatever you're after for 1/8 of the price after the market has become saturated and the bottom's fallen out of that new, trendy breed.

You are of course right. Still I understand the law of supply and demand. Green Fire had to pay a lot to import birds and I've researched it and it's not easy nor cheap. They didn't import hundreds of each breed and from what I've read they paid $250 for each bird on top of duties and fees and all that. I can't say what EACH bird cost. Then you've got feed and breeding and time. How many hours do you spend? Plus facilities and all that that cost. So how do they make up that cost?

I don't have money to burn but I also believe in paying what is fair.

Here in NY there are few if any Delaware breeders, but I can't sell chicks expensively because the demand is not there. In fact BCM's are more common and more expensive. Because people want them. My CM's may lay just as dark or darker eggs but folks don't want them. There is a demand for good stock and RARE breeds and Green Fire has the money to import them.

Another thing people have to consider is Greenfire's "juvenile pairs" are 6-8 week old chicks.

They're barely 2 months old and still in need of food and water during the trip as well as warmth. . . I'd consider it a HUGE gamble.


Another thing. . . Most of the breeds Greenfire offers are far cheaper when from a lot of other different sources.

People bring up the excuse of importation time and time again, but colors like Jubilee Orps don't need importation, their Shamos were bought straight from California, their Hulseys, Marans, Buff/Silver/Gold Laced Brahmas, and Lav Orps certainly weren't imported, and their Coronation Sussex have been around for long enough now that like most other varieties of theirs, plenty people have them now and sell them at normal price.


Just putting out something to consider.

This is the second time someone has mentioned someone other than Green Fire as having what Green Fire has on their web site. If anyone has the other web sites then please post them here, because I can't find them with this computer.

I have found Lemon Cuckoo orp "eggs" for $255 for 6! and I see no one else who has the Swedish Flower Hens. If you know anyone who does you just let me know.

I subscribe to PP mag and there are a number of breeds that interest me. I can't figure out why in this economy there isn't someone in the UK making a business of importing their breeds over here. It would certainly help in the preservation of breeds they're so concerned about. I would really like to acquire some Scots Dumpies. From what I understand they aren't easy to find.

Heck the poster for the Islandics just wants to brag IMO cuz I don't see these up for sale either or I would have ordered some.

Sandhill sells Scots Dumpies. Oh and try hinkjc she has the BEST lavender Orps around....

On the Green Fire note. I have purchased many birds from them and have always been extremely satisfied. I believe on average they pay $1500 a bird to get them here. That includes quarantine, shipping, the bird, permits and any vet that might be needed. They spend a ton of money on these birds. Not everyone wants to take that kind of risk. So they have a huge overhead. I have thought about importing birds but there is no guarantee they will arrive alive in the US. This is a big risk. I would highly recommend spending the money with them. You can spend $75 on Silver Sussex from many people that are great birds. The same bird at Green Fire will cost you $99. I don not think $25 more a bird is that much considering they are the one's responsible for bringing them to the US. If it was not for Green Fire we would not even have these birds in the US. Give them a shot if you can you will not be disappointed. Do not get me wrong. There are many quality breeders out there with great birds and fantastic breeding practices.
