I have 8 backyard chickens in a coop in my back yard, they are maybe 5 months old and i got them from my uncle. Today when i get home from school i notice one of my chickens bobbing his head really close to the ground and stumbling when it walks, it will not pick its head all the way up and when it stands and eats off the ground he slowly starts to lean on his head... i put him in a closed off area of the coop cause i noticed he was getting tripped on, plz help me.. what do i do

She still can walk and her head is still straight and she can move it, but it sorta hangs

She is also holding her wings low by her side

Ive had someone tell me his neck might be broke.. is there anything i can do about that

I'm not an expert on health problems, but are there any other symptoms? Irregular or noisy breathing, discharge from eyes/nose/mouth, odd looking poops? You may want to consider putting him someplace completely away from the others in case he's got something contagious.

Not sure about a broken neck-- is there any way he could have been injured like that? (Like from a dog?)

Hope you get some more replies. Good luck.

i have them completly surounded with fence and wood.. i do not have a top ontop of the coop yet, but to my knowledge they have not gotten out, and if they did it would have been through the top which i dont think it could have flown back over. i have not seen any other issues or symptoms, as i said he still stands and walks, chirps and seems to be eating off of the ground, but will not lift his head all the way.. i have him in a tote inside at the moment with water.

Botulism is also called limberneck because it causes paralysis in the neck and eventually the entire body. If it is, this is very serious and needs to be treated early.

Are there any signs of injury other then the hanging head?

If not, it could be wry neck. It is a vitamin deficiency. You can try this vitamin protocol and see how it goes...

.5mls poly vi sol, without iron, daily
400 ius of vitamin E twice daily.

You can get both at your local Walmart. Will run you about $10. Try this for several days...see if the symptoms get better. I would keep him in the house in a safe, dry place until he gets better. Otherwise, the other chickens might jump on him and he would be far worse off.

Another good suggestion. Could they have gotten into moldy feed or something else that is moldy or rotten?
