Need advice. Baby was scalped.

I had an even worse injury to one of my chicks of a similar age today.
The opening goes all the way down to the base of her neck.

Many years ago I had a hen recover from an even worse injury, so I know they are remarkable healers.

So keep it clean, use antibiotic ointment, and make sure she is getting extra protein in her diet, cooked eggs, cat food, yogurt, whatever she will eat.
Plenty of liquids, diluted gatorade, pediolyte or since your husband is a vet, he probably has some type of vitamin, electolyte solution he might prefer.

I haven't used the blue-kote yet, but I will probably be buying some on my way home from work tomorrow.

The little one (who I'm told is a boy) is quietly sleeping with a stuffed otter. I gave him some yogurt before bed and he was quite active, even pecking me. I have high hopes for tomorrow.

When one of our roos scalped my little bantam frizzle I just knew she was a goner, but to my amazement she healed fine. It looked awful, Of course the roo then started terrorizing all my bantams to the point they wouldn't come out of the coop, He was very large and low man roo. So we took care of him, he made nice chicken an dumplings

I hope both of yours heals without complications. They are amazing! Now because she was an adult she went around bald till she molted but all her feathers are back and you'd never know anything happened.

to you both!

The little one is doing well. I'm cleaning the wound every day. I had also been applying blukote, but it seemed to keep the wound too dry for it to heal/re-grow skin. So now i'm using neosporin instead.

When can I reintegrate him? After he's completely healed, or just after chance of infection is over? The poor thing misses his family.

I wouldn't put it back till completely healed or it could get pecked in the same place, chickens are drawn to red and or wounds, thats why blue-kote is so good, if you could use the blue-kote and watch the chickens reaction to their flock mate most likely they won't notice because the B-K disguises the wound. Glad to hear it's doing well.
