Ok, I just had two die. Posted about it earlier. New post but now I see two of them (alive) have a swolen eye? Any ideas. Can it be transmitted to chickens. What is it.

Suggestions...

Tks

Sounds like some form of fowl pox, maybe ,anyway go to your local feed store and buy some antibiotic to go into their water supply, should clear up your problem soon. May also be able to give each bird an antibiotic shot which would work faster.

I keep several packets of this around the house for emergencies.
Good luck!

YES! THIS CAN BE A SIGN OF ILLNESS FROM CHICKENS!!! ITS A TELLTALE SIGN OF CORYZA/ MYCOPLASMA TYPE ILLNESSES THAT ARE MOST COMMONLY TRANSMITTED FROM CHICKENS TO GAMEBIRDS. CAN YOU POST A PIC?

I agree with JJMR, sounds like something from the chickens. I've used medicated game bird starter on the coturnix that came home from the auction, since one had a puffy eye (didn't see it before already buying them). I gave some to my current birds as well, as a preventative. It worked well, my birds recovered pretty quickly.

BETTA in my experience I'd say yours wasnt a mycoplasma--- Sorry to say it usually doesnt respond well to the medicated feed or standard meds you get from the feed store (perhaps a peck or other minor trauma to the eye during capture/ shipping/ sale???)

Its harder to see on quail than other speces because of their size and feathering, but the eye watering/ swelling is actually a late sign of these illnesses--- the whole maxofacial sinus swells 1st, but its hard to see on these guys unless you know what your looking for--- Fitzy's photos show a very advanced case and the 1st pic if you look you can see the whole side of the birds face is swollen... the eye swelling often comes last

Treatment is usually recommended as baytril (vet only) in combination with either lincomycin or sulfa or all 3--- sulfa you can find easy enough, but linco is usually a mail/ internet order only sort of drug and baytril is dispensed only by your vet, the sad part--- cure is ellusive on this lil guys, thats why I preach dont mix (I have been here and learned the hard way) as prevention is rally the only sure cure. The really bad part--- If you save the animal it will now be a carrier and may infect any other birds it comes in contact with for the full lifespan of the animal. So not only does it cost big bucks to fix, the cure- if sucessful- renders the bird useless for anything other than solitary pet use.

these are not bacterial illnesses! They are mycoplasma illnesses and do not respond to antibiotics--- the antibiotic is merely profylaxsis to prevent secondary infection from bacteria. The mycoplasma illness simply runs its course (like chicken pox in children) In practice the antibiotic prevents another bacterial illness from coming in and infecting the bird and hopefully prevents death from 2ndary infection which is often times the case with these situations.

I'm not sure what it was then. It did clear up after giving them feed medicated with BMD, though it may have been simply because of a cleaner environment as well. It cleared up within 2-3 days.

absolutely, better husbandry and treatment will fix many maladies... Its very possible irritation from dusty environment, or some sort of bacterial illness that would repspond in about 2-3 days... or even an agressive bird that was pecking folks in the eye? or birds thrashing about and causing minor traumatic injury to their eyes.... hard to say. I hope that's the answer here and that I am incorrect about the mycoplasma....
