Need advice- Freeze warning tonight!

is it ok for the chickens o lay on the cold ground. im in North Alabama and its COLD here. they usually free range but wasn't moving about to much when I let them out they wanted to lay down a couple of them did anyways. so I put them back in the pen so they would be close to the coop to get in of course they wnt right now anyways. I laid a blanket on the ground for them to lay on other than the ground and they aren't getting on it either.

@BatonRougeChick how have your chickens been doing with the winter weather in BR? Mine are still laying. When it gets below freezing and we have this wintry mix I remove the outside roost, which in turn makes the chickens go in the coop. If I don't do this, they will sit on the outside roost all night in the freezing rain/snow/rain. They have been known to sit on the outside roost all night in thunderstorms.

Hi! Mine don't have an outside roost so they do go inside, but my coop is partially open and not made for winter weather! My rooster's comb is frostbitten . But otherwise they seem fine. I wrapped their entire coop in 6 mil plastic sheeting on Monday which kept the cold wind out, and they were much warmer. I unwrapped them this morning and they were happy! Do you have any frostbite issues? I'm going to start building a run off their coop this weekend and will add an outside roost. I'm anxious to see if they will try to use it at night. What kind of cover do you have on your run? Here is what my coop looked like this week. I'm in Denham, so not far from you.

I put a blanket over mine since it is so small. I was really worried about ventilating the coop but keeping the chickens warm too. I just left the vents on the side facing the house open. They did really well. It is supposed to warm up now.

Mine seem to love the outside roost. I haven't seen any signs of frostbite or other problems since the cold. This is a picture of my coop or shall I say chicken tractor.
