Thank you! We actually have 4 now, we had five. We go two initially for my daughter because she is allergic to Cats and dogs. Then after having them a year We ended up rescuing two more from a unhealthy environment and then on a visit to or Reptile Vet for a sick tortoise with a cold he asked us if we would take another one that was abandoned at his office with severe dog bites to it. The tortoise was doing better after the vet treated him so we couldn't say no. He said he knew we cared for tortoises and gave them a great home so he chose us to care for him. Well we ended up re-homing the one we got from the vet 5 years after we first got him because unfortunately he was trying to mount our other four. He was the same size as our other four but we think he was in a small terrarium for that first year of his life so his size looked like he was a one year old in fact he was more like a 2-3 year old. When we got him he did get big very fast because he had a huge house with a large yard and all he could eat. SO at age 6 when he started mounting our others ,he was actually tormenting them. He would not leave them alone all day! I mean all day, my other four would stop coming out of their burrow and when they did they would hide under the smoker or tables so he could not actually mount them. I felt like this behavior was because he was older and was sexually mature enough to be doing this and had a female around. He was doing what he knew to do but i also felt like it was literally driving him nuts because all he wanted was to mate. So we found a great home for Scuter and he is much happier being a loner tortoise! We check on him and he now has three boys to play with. IN Arizona we have too many Sulcata's and we don't want to add to that problem so we will end up fixing ours. We will have to give a couple to my oldest daughter in California who has an acre so that out backyard will be enough for two when they are bigger. They are easy and amazing animals! They are so smart and actually come to their names and they knock on my sliding glass backdoor because they want to come in and explore and we let them. They also go right to the kitchen cause they know they will get treats. We love them so much! I will definitely be very careful with my chicken and the Tortoises interacting until the chickens are big. Once they are bigger They will actually scare the tortoises but for now the tortoises just want to know what they are and so we let them sniff and they usually just walk away to go about eating the grass. Sorry i am not usually such a rambler!!!Your Sulcata Tortoise is so cute
It's called Chicken Movies/TV. Hubby & I loved sitting out in the patio watching the antics in the backyard when I allowed roaming. Now I keep mine penned due to the neighbors (7) dogs. Yard's fenced but I've seen on climb over to get out on the other side & now with their Greyhound climbing on the rock wall, he reaches to top of the fence
So better safe than sorry.
Hubby did build me a great open air enclosure & the girls don't seem to mind. Now & then I put them in the mobile run for grass but only when I'm out there with them.
Chickens are the best STRESS RELIEVERS every!
My daughter loves tortoises too she has a horsefield (Russian) next to her bed but she has always loved sulcatas she said "I know they are the biggest land tortoise in the world but I will give him my bedroom with a reptile radiator" that was the funniest thing I've ever heard her say.Thank you! Tell her when she gets to be like 20 something so by the time she is out on her own with a yard she can take it with her. My Daughter swears she will never marry or have children! Also never leave her Mom and Dad ... she is only 11 so we will see...My daughter loves tortoises too she has a horsefield (Russian) next to her bed but she has always loved sulcatas she said "I know they are the biggest land tortoise in the world but I will give him my bedroom with a reptile radiator" that was the funniest thing I've ever heard her say.

Your tortoises are so LUCKY that they have found you. Some People just buy them thinking they stay small and cute but don't realise the commitment they are making I've seen people that keep them in terrible conditions its unbelievable they deserve to live a long happy life.
